Ok, I'm a little, no, more than a little confused when it comes to most Proffesional, Slabbing Companies treatment of error coins.

When it comes to slabbing errors, what company is the most knowledgeable? From what I understand, ANACS is the best at errors, but unless you point it out specifically on the submission form, they won't list it. They will if you pay the extra fee for them to research it for you though. I think this is how all PG's are in accepting submissions.

As for Pedigree's...I recently purchased alot of items from the estate of Pete (DaNutt) Bishal. One set of items I was excited about were 9, 1979-P SBA errors. These vary from Wide-Rim, Near date...etc. I wrote ANACS and asked if I could get them verified, slabbed, graded and listed with an "Ex-Pete Bishal Collection" label. They never wrote me back.

So how am I to know what types or errors will be graded by TPG's, and what types not to submit?

    Thanx for letting me ramble...

Badger, I don't know about all the companies, but PCGS will certify any mint error, and they will also put a pedigree on a label, provided you can provide documentation that the coins came from the Bishal Collection. I suspect the other grading companies are the same way.

What it sounds like you are referring to are VARIETIES, not errors. A variety is due to die design differences (i.e. Type-1 vs Type-2 mint marks on the SBA dollars). An error would be something like an off-center strike or brockage.

For errors, all services are fine and you will not see any real selling price difference between which company graded them.

For varieties, ANACS used to be king. However, that has changed. All the services are doing a lot more with varieties as the area has gotten hot thanks partly to the Cherrypicker's Guide. If it is a major variety, any of the services are fine and should recognize it. If it is minor (not listed in a widely noted publication), ANACS is the only way to go as they will attribute practically any variety.

ANACS will not likely list the Pete Bishal provenance. It's usually reserved for famous collections, not dealer inventory.

Call them up and ask. For the varieties you listed, all the services will list them at no additional charge.

All of the major grading services are reasonably competent when dealing with simple errors. They do not do a good job with novel, subtle, obscure, complex, or compound errors. In such cases you can't predict what they'll put on the label. Incorrect, incomplete, inadequate, overly general, or unjustifiably precise descriptions are par for the course. And don't get me started on grading. When it comes to errors, the assigned grades are meaningless. Errors with severe post-strike damage regularly get high MS-grades, while weak strikes and grease strikes are often under-graded.

    badger:
Don't take offense about ANACS, I understand that they have become very poor at responding to questions.
Perhaps you should consider PCI, they recently got JT Stanton on board.
Perhaps it is time to try them again.
