NGC groups all the Liberty Cap cents together (1793-1796). They are funny about smaller design differences. Some they split up; others they don't!? An example of a place where they differentiate is the SLQ's. The NGC Registry type set has 3(!) different designs listed: -- Type 1 (no stars below the eagle) -- Type 2 (stars below the eagle) -- Type 3? (stars below the eagle; recessed date) An example of a place where they DON'T differentiate is the Liberty Head large cents. The NGC Registry type set has 2 different designs listed: -- Matron Head (1816-1835) -- Braided Hair (1839-1857) Note that they DON'T differentiate the Matron Head Modified (1835-1839): The Young Head from the others (I think they include them with the earlier Matron Head design). So as far as NGC is concerned your example is not a unique differentiation omission. I don't agree with them but ....
My Large Cent collection (incidentally the 1834 is my oldest coin). I am just beginning to study this type so I would love to hear opinions on grade, Newcomb #'s, etc. ... 1834 (nasty looking scratches on word LIBERTY and the wreath)... 1841... 1847... 1853...
That '53 is beautiful. My oldest coin is a '53 half dime, but my second oldest is a '54 half cent. It has a lovely patina and is well struck.
The 34 is readily identified by the reverse as N-1. Only two reverses have the point of the leaf well past (E)S and this reverse has a leaf tip under the upright of E(S) unlike the other. The other five have the leaf under the right side of (E)S.
