I don't have photos, I just want to know if they are mostly rare. I know that they are mostly new condition.

There is many confederate notes but if they are in decent shape as a whole, maybe $30-$100 each depending on the note. Again pics help. Prices mentioned are for the more common types.

What's the value of regular US money? ;)

As Mat has already said, and assuming genuine, more info is required to give even a vague answer. Also, and with all due respect to his estimates, which depending on note and condition may or may not be reasonable, until you actually know what your friend has, it's probably best not to assume anything, especially value. There are lots of knockoffs out there... everything from Cheerio facsimiles to centennial novelties to modern replicas sold as souvenirs at battle sites (the last I was at Gettysburg, even some gas stations were selling them). There are also contemporary counterfeits, but the point is that, as with anything else in this hobby, it is absolutely necessary to do your homework before making any assumptions. Below are a couple of basic links that you may find helpful. Good luck.

Ive spent as little as $10 for nice examples of Confederate Currency. Overall, general notes won't break the bank and really nice looking notes can be found for the $5o range since they printed so many.

Heck, how old is the friend? If his original Father waited until he was at least 75 when he was born, and provided he saved this money at the early age of eight or nine, the friend must be over 75 as well. It probably was a quick answer before he did the math.
