I recently purchased this jefferson nickel, it is graded ms 67 by NGC in one of their older holders, i am curious if it will grade up to a star or plus designation. Thanks!

The images are a little too small to make that sort of determination, but my gut says that it will not upgrade to a star designation. Maybe it could add FS if it qualifies, I just can't see it enough to make the call.

Without better photos, it is really hard to answer your question. The coin looks to have nice toning, but it already resides in an NGC holder. If it was star worthy, why didn't it get a star the first time around?

Either way, it is extremely unlikely that the could would achieve a higher grade than the one assigned. They have only graded one 1945-S MS67+, one 1945-S MS67+*, and three MS68s.

If you are interested in better photos and/or an in hand opinion of the coin, I would be more than happy to help you. I am pretty good at grading Jefferson Nickels.

no don't think it will go that high first its proof not mint state and its tones and discoloration /tarnish are detracting.. to me. and id say 64

unless grading standards have changed, coins don't get higher quality as they age. If the coin was graded before plus and star designations you may have a chance, but your also shooting for 67+, which basically means that it wasn't good enough for 68, but it was really close. NGC has graded only 3 1945 S nickels to be designated MS68, compared to 1699 MS-67. Your also going to pay grading and reslabing fees for a premium bump of.........$7. according to NGC. It's a great coin, and if it is full steps without a designation, I would get that thing there fast as you can.

I have to agree with Paul's statement, "If it was star worthy, why didn't it get a star the first time around?"

If NGC felt a star was worthy of this coin, they would have placed it on the label next to their grade opinion.

Thanks for the input. I just thought it had a slight chance of up grading to a star or plus, but i now doubt myself given the fact that so few coins are graded that high. The coin was graded in the NGC first generation holder so i don't know if they offered the star designation at the time. I will try to get better photos later. Merry Christmas to all!

The first generation NGC holders were black and are extremely valuable. To see which generation slab your coin is, please click the link below. NGC started using the star designation in the early part of 2000.

My guess is that you probably have a no line fatty which is generation 5.
