Yeah sometimes. But just like all of the price guides the Numismedia values listed on Heritage are often off in either direction, too high or too low, even their listed wholesale values. But my comment was specifically directed to MadMartigan's comment regarding his use of what Numismedia calls their FMV. For example, I just looked up an 1885-CC Morgan in MS64 on Numismedia. Their FMV for that coin is listed as $920. Recently completed sales on Heritage show that coin selling for $763 pretty consistently. That's a significant difference and it is typical of what Numismedia calls their FMV. So anybody that uses Numismedia FMV as their buying guide is going to end up having their dealer just love them. My intent was to point out to MadMartigan that he needs to change what he is doing when buys coins.
Actually I prefer using numismedia as a price guide when buying off Ebay as opposed to using the Redbook. I put it on one browser tab and Ebay on the other. A quick price check is thus accomplished before considering whether or not to bid. I try not to ever bid more than 80% of the numismedia price. I lose a lot of auctions, but I am usually pretty happy when I win, which happens enough to satisfy me.
OK, but I'm curious, which Numimedia price is that you use ? They have about 6 different ones for every coin.
I also use numismedia when buying off of eBay for the most part. I also adhere to the 80% rule. I shoot for 70-75% below numismedia FMV and after about 60-70 coins I've maintained about 81% back of those values on an average basis. Rarely do I pay more than that for the coin, unless it's not likely to be seen in a similar state for some length of time.
Its a good jumping off point, my dealer prices things pretty fairly and normally well below numismedia but if you need a quick FMV and can check on your phone while in the shop it gives you a great jumping off point. Who is going to be going through heritage auctions and ebay auctions while at a coin shop trying to gauge a value.
If using a phone to check numismedia, it would not be that much more difficult or time consuming to check Heritage, especially if opened and signed in before walking into the shop.
Now that you mention it, I don't know and never thought to look, but this may be worth looking into. Actually, a quick google search shows one available for the iPhone, but I didn't notice one for Android.
Ohhh that might be a nice app to get then too. Going to get a nice coin for my 7070 tomorrow with some Christmas cash so might be good to have that. Was thinking half cent, capped bust half or 20 cent piece.
