new 15th century coin

    and so far my only 15th century coin. byzanticlause brought me this one for christmas!

    giovanni maria visconti (duke of milan)
    duchy of milan
    ar grosso
    1402-1412

    o: st. ambrose

    r: biscione, a seal of the visconti. i thought this was a snake breathing fire, but it's a snake eating a man! neat!

    interesting wikipedia article on st. ambrose, of interested to the ancient collectors considering his dealings with many of the roman emperors.

    looks like his skull is still in milan at the basilica he built.
