Are these good prices for Trade Dollars?

I'm still new at this, but these prices seem a bit high. Am I right?

1st coin is described as "S .9 mm high; ticks and pinscrs" (I'm guessing that is "pin scratches", or something like that?)
2nd one as "S .9 mm high; some dirt on reverse; very few marks"
3rd one is described as "S 1.2 mm high; pinscrs., somewhat 'crusty' look. S 1.2 mm high, S is over D, right of 7 is under T"
4th one is described as "S 1.2 mm high, 7 is left of T, '1' is 1 mm from base. ANACS had called this coin AU-58"

That's pretty high for a problem coin.

Yeah. I'm looking for trustworthy local coin shops and I don't think this guy's gonna make the list.

He said he'd give me a "small discount" from these prices, but I'm expecting "small" to be just that.

    Thanks.

Try one of the dealers on here, there are more than a few good ones. Try dropping either Tom B or Matt (lost Dutchman) a line, both are very well respected dealers and will treat you fairly.

I can't believe I forgot to post prices?

Coin 1: $400 (PCGS Gen., AU details, clnd)
2: $350 (PCGS AU details, envir. Dmg.)
    3: $375 (PCGS XF-40)
    4: $395 ("AU details, cleaned")

My question: what *would* be reasonable prices for these? To my untrained eye and novice grading/pricing skills, he seems to be at least $100 high on all of them, especially since they've almost all been cleaned...?!

No--they are all problem coins. Buy a certified one for in the neighborhood of $300, and you are good. Didn't you get that from the various posters? Get a GRADED , non-problem coin from a reputable source.

Thanks. Still working with forum members to find a non-problem coin in my price range.

Was just thinking about meeting up with this guy to talk him down and see how low he'd go. He has nicer coins, but the cheapest non-problem is a PCGS AU-58 for $750. I'm starting to think his prices are about 2x what they should be...

I would agree. Too high. Look at the coin in the thread I posted. It is a toned AU 58 NGC common date Trade Dollar, and I paid less than $300 for it. People think it was a good buy, and I agree.

He gave it to me at the acquisition cost, since we are friends. He didn't make any money, obviously, and could have EASILY resold it for $700, as he had lots of collectors interested. We go way back, so he sold it for cost--$285.

Really, it wasn't a 'good deal' as much as it was a GIFT. Like you said, he could have easily resold it for $700, so what he really did was give you a gift of $415 straight from his pocket to yours. I hope you appreciate that kind of friendship!

It was definitely a great gesture. I have been both a friend and good customer of his for 25 years. I would call it a "gesture of mutual appreciation," rather than a gift. He's done very well financially via my purchases. It wasn't just charity--mutual decency applied. :)

No problem with a bit of good will thrown your way for being a loyal customer, but the tone of the post was, "This is what kind of deal you should be getting" which is just not realistic. The OP could look to the end of time and not find a deal like that.

    Very nice coin BTW.....

Thanks. You are right--the OP would NEVER find a coin like that for $300. However, he could for $600-700, and if he wants an attractive Trade Dollar that is AU, that is what he'd need to pay. If he wanted a MS Trade, he'd be talking a grand or more. All I was pointing out is that one can find a nice one for a DECENT price. I would have paid $600 for that one happily, and probably more. The AU 55 bright one that I recently got was only $450, and it was a nice coin for that much:
