today i had fed ex on the phone telling me there are custom charges and vat at 17.5% due on 500 1 gram bars im importing to the uk from istanbul so i told fed-ex that gold is exempt from vat in the uk which it is.The woman was suprised and tried to tell me it wasint.I insisted it was. so she gets the customs and excise to phone me up and he insists its classed as jewellery not investment gold which i again refuse.So we had to look through the codes and i explained which is right that its a higher purity than can be used for jewellery ie higher than 22k which is the limit under that its classed as jewellery. So he consulted with his boss and long and short of it i won my case.On the fact it was of a higher purity than gold jewellery ever is.,very strange in the fact you would think they would know that. very very relieved
