Man, I love these good ol' Serpent Biga coins!! => they are beyond fricken cool, yes?!! ... yes!! Antoninus Pius Æ Drachm Roman Egypt (Alexandria) 138-161 AD Year 14 Diameter: Weight: Obverse: Reverse: Triptolemos in biga drawn by two winged serpents right Reference: => oh and obviously => "PLEASE" post any of your own coins that even come close to being associated with this coin o' mine (I love seeing your coins, gang!!)
Ooooh, I saw that today... wondered if you were going to nab it. Glad it went to a good home. Here's my Triptolemos. Looks like he's sitting in a winged wheelchair. ATTICA, Eleusis 360-330 BC AE16 Obv: Triptolemos, seated left in a winged chariot drawn by two snakes Rev: Pig standing right on mystic staff, bucranium below? Ref: SNG Cop 415?
Some might wonder just what could be considered close to a biga pulled by winged serpents but I'll risk it and offer wingless serpents. M. Volteus - April 76 BC - Liber head / Ceres in biga of snakes. This was one of my first Republican coins. I had it in 1987 when I started numbering my coins but really do not know exactly when it slithered into my collection.
They all look great. Alas I don't have one of my own yet. It's a sad collection that doesn't have a biga drawn by serpents.
Another winner. I think I have ran out of things to say. I was so close to pulling the trigger on an Antoninus Pius tetradrachm today with a Canopus of Osiris reverse (I want this type really badly) but decided to save my money which was probably for the better since I am taking a bit of a beating on the Christmas gifts (surprising the gf with a super awesome gift that is so Canadian I don't want to say it because you would all just make fun of me)
Curling! I believe there was an article in the Numismatist about it a few years ago. Nice one! Pssssstt! I WANT!
uh-oh, Whiz => never buy your spouse a vacuum or a broom as a present!! ... just jokes ... Yup, curling and hockey are a couple of Canada's strong-suits, eh? Whiz, do you curl as well?? (I have only curled in a handful of bonspiels myself => but really it was more about the partying/drinking afterwards, than the actual sport itself ... I never really caught the curling-bug)
Super coins, everyone! Triptolemos is tough. There's a certain type I want of Elagabalus from Nikolopolis, but I haven't found one with sufficient detail to satisfy my eye, and if I did, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it. Doug, that Volteius is superb!
Steve I used to curl when I was younger. Haven't done so in awhile but might pick it up again next year. I am much better at bonspieling (drinking) all day. The gf is a huge curler though. When she was younger she played in all of the big teams and has in fact beat a couple of the younger players that were in the Olympic trials a couple weeks ago.
Hey Whiz, I'm no Don Juan with the ladies, but I think you should rephrase that descriptive statement?
I found a sweet Serpent-Biga example while searching through an old CNG auction (not my coin, but certainly worth lookin' at!!) ... congrats if this is one of your coins!!
