I was commenting earlier in a thread that a new fellow had posted about the grading of coins and how difficult it was for him. He was looking for advice on how to sharpen his skills and I suggested the ANA Grading Standards 7th edition. Having posted that, I went and got the 7th edition out of the bookcase and leafed through it a bit. Stopping at 'Franklins' I spotted this picture for a VG-8........

Now, no way does this look VG to me so I run and grab the 6th edition off the shelf.......

Now that appears more in line with what I'd consider a VG coin. What do you guys think?

As I recall, several ANA Grading Guides were notorious for having swapped images that confounded collectors.

I think you're right. They are swapped in the two editions.

I just bought an AU 55 NGC 1898 Barber quarter and comparing it with the PCGS AU 55 1892 B.Q. I just bought, I'd say PCGS was way more generous in its designation than NGC. In my eye the 1898 looks maybe MS 60 or 61 tops. The feathers on the eagle are more defined and separate showing the tiniest of wear, while the eagle's feathers on the 1892 shows significant wear, and the lines between the feathers are rubbed out completely or not as defined. Once I get the 1892 in hand, I'll post both coins. There is more comparisons than that, but those are the biggest two that I see.

Good eye Ken , though I have both , I still use the 6th . Not for any particular reason just because it's always next to my computer . Definitely swapped pics . Better tell Frank .

You really can't use pictures to grade anyways , they will get you in the ball park but the written descriptions are what will give you the grade .

The OP probably didn't need to be edited. It was attributed to source, and only brief excerpts were used so it should fall under "Fair Use". If you had posted the whole section for grading that coin then sure that would be a copyright problem.

The pictures were the problem. Pictures stand alone, each picture in and of itself is a complete work in its entirety. Had you merely posted the text, then it would not be an issue.
