Here is another new purchase. This time from my small side collection of Eastern denarii of Hadrian. Hadrian denarius Obv:- HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P bare head right Rev:- COS III, Virtus, standing right, holding scepter and parazonium; left foot raised, resting on helmet. Unknown Eastern Mint. Bust style is very well executed and good enough to be from Rome. Reference:- RIC -, cf RSC 355, cf BMC Page 380 #25 (Vienna) (draped bare head bust right) same reverse die though the image is very grainy So unpublished in the major references. If anyone knows a reference for the coin then please let me know. Martin
Wow Martin, awesome coin!! Great portrait and fantastic reverse, with Virtus standing on a dude's helmet (great lookin' coin!!) ... very cool
Me too. Martin: I love the reverse. Too bad the portrait has those nasty scratches. I have some like that including my avatar.
Eastern Hadrian denarii are scarce enough as a whole that people who are too condition conscious don't have any. I still don't have one and would love to find one with twice the problems of this excellent coin.
I don't know anything about his danarii, but I've seen several quite nice tetradrachmas recently, all of them going for about $100.
