not the normal sized S for this coin. i could not find any photos of the smaller S variety. any opinions?
Wow was that recovered from a shipwreck? Only silver coins I seen that corroded were from saltwater would be very cool if it was
Looks a lot more like somebody tried to clean it with acid to me. But yes, I believe that is the small S.
thanks for all the replies. i received the coin in the mail and it is a lighter weight than a seated half dollar. the edges of the coin look thin, and in some places on the edges, even thinner, looks like the coin was flatened by something. i am not so sure the coin is genuine.
Were there photos of the coin before you purchased it, or did you make the buy not knowing what it looked like?
I I hestioned if it eas made of a base metal not silver is not a reactive metal and it doesn't often react and corrode unless subjected to ceryIN enviromentS like saltwater or sjlfur based acids or compounds that make it pit and decay to the extent of this coin basically it tarnishes but doesn't degraid
Sorry if my reply hard to read between carpal tunnel a pain pill caus my back is iot and a couple giant s ize industrial strength abs and cranberry s even spellcheck on my phone don't always keep up
i don't have a coin scale. however, i would estimate the weight to be about 50 percent lighter than the normal weight of a seated half dollar.
If it is that much lighter is doubtful its real is likely a of the period base metal counterfeit that got buried for a while I've had several early counterfeit coins over the years some are better than others all are far more interesting than Chinese fakes
