I am. I would like to do a 1909-2009 set. I have a lot of the memorials but only a few higher grade wheats. The earlier dates start getting pretty pricey. I guess will work my way back.
1909-1940 if MS-66Red a arm + leg!!!! Just remember this a lot of cointalk members can help you with Ef - Au coins so ask around.!
Aside from the fact that several such coins are going for $50,000+, there is more than one date where there are no 66's in existence.
Thanks!! I will keep that in mind. I know there are some coins I will only be able to afford in lower grades and also some I will most likely never be able to own! Unless of course I win the $550 million lotto jackpot Tuesday. I guess I can always dream. It is fun to be able to collect high grade memorials pretty cheap though. I paid 25¢ for the 1993!
As Lange's book on Lincolns and my personal experience bears out the 22, 23, 24, and 25's are all exemplified by mushy strikes. One of the real challenges of a wheat cent set is finding a sharp and eye appealing examples of those years from all mints. It would be nice to know why all the dies were so overused. Ideas anyone?
It was mainly the branch mints - not Philly. As I recall, Philly was supplying dies to the branch mints and they had trouble supplying enough to meet demand. The result was Denver and San Fran trying to keep up production numbers by keeping the dies in service longer. In many instances, they had no choice but to keep using worn dies because they were out, yet, the pressure was on to keep producing cents.
I did a little research and I believe I have a genuine 1970 s SD/LD Lincoln WDDO-006. Can I have a professional answer if possible?
