Here is a PCGS graded 1853 Liberty Seated quarter I purchased this past summer. Can you correctly guess the grade it was assigned? I'll post a picture of the entire slab next Sunday. Good Luck!
I was going to go 55 but with the reverse being so nice I think they may push it up. Just my thoughts
I was going to wait until Sunday but decided to go ahead and post the picture now. PCGS graded the coin AU-50. The coin was submitted to CAC and they affixed a gold bean to the slab. For those of you who don't know about the gold bean it is only given to a coin which in CAC's opinion is under graded by at least one full grade. This coin has been viewed by several dealers I know and all are in the opinion that the quarter should have been graded at least AU-53 and some thought it should have been graded AU-55.
That is some seriously conservative grading on this coin. Either way though nice pickup and beautiful coin i love the seated quart series.
Yes, I can send the coin in for reevaluation and that was brought up by a couple of dealers I know. The primary reason I won't is will it get a high enough grade to offset the premium I paid for it having a gold sticker on it. To do so it would have to come back at least an AU-55 and then the question is would CAC think it high end for that grade and put a green sticker on it. Of the 1853 arrows and rays quarters submitted to CAC two were given gold stickers, the other is an AU-55, and 92 were deemed good enough to get green stickers. Those numbers do not include the 1853-O quarters.
I see... for a dealer it wouldn't make sense. As a collector I would send it in. Anyway the coin looks just great no matter which number is on the slab. Are you selling those coins online?
I agree with keeping at is. If you go to sell it, that gold bean will bring a premium. Especially since it's in a PCGS holder. The registry collectors will go nuts for it. I own a common date Morgan MS63 with a Gold Bean. I'm holding on to it for now. Edit to add: I'm not a "bean" collector. When I bought the coin, I agreed it was undergraded, so I added it to my collection. The gold bean was a bonus.
