I picked these two Ike's up at a coin show today. I also bought a 1972 type 3 and a couple of others. I think the type 3 would only grade 63, but I only paid $3.50 for it. I was thinking/hoping the 71 would make MS65 and the 77 MS64 or 63. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Those are not gem grade Ikes. I'd say they were 63s. Numerous bag marks.

I know the 77 might only make ms63 but how come you say the other wouldn't make ms65? I have been looking at a lot of pcgs graded Ike's and was mostly comparing from those. For instance these two in the pics below were graded ms65 by pcgs and has a ton of bag marks in the main visual field. I'm not arguing with you. I'm just trying to learn. Thank you for the reply.

There are too many bag/contact marks on both sides of the 71. I can see a distracting mark on Ike's nose, in addition to the other marks.

    Nice looking 62/63 Ike.

In my opinion, having owned many MS 65 Ikes, neither one is even close. They look 63ish to me. As my colleague said above, just too many contact marks.

I think your 71D is a very nice looking Ike.
The obverse fields look better than most Ike's from '71.
Bag marks are a pretty common issue.
I would be concerned about what is going on at about 3 o'clock on the reverse rim.
I'd be interested to know how or if it grades.
The 77 looks well struck. A few noticeable marks on the obverse keep it from grading better.
I think you got a great deal on both.
    :)

Thanks guy. Grading gets so confusing sometimes. I honestly thought when I bought them they were 63s but when I started looking at pcgs graded Ike's I started questioning it. For $3 each I guess I can't go wrong on them. As for the spot on the reverse, coin dude, under magnification it is just a really light toning spot. Does anyone know if pcgs or ngc is better with grading Ike's? I've heard people say for instance that pcgs is more lenient with franklins and ngc is tougher. I didnt know if Ike's may be similar. Also, while I was at the coin show this Saturday, I sat down at at a dealer's table and started looking at Ikes. I had been there on Friday, and the dealer remembered that I was looking at Ike's. He walked over to me and brought me a tray of all the silver dates in the series. I find it nice when dealers take the time to remember their customers. Especially when they remember what series they collect. I feel like it shows they care about their customers, and it will make me definitely buy from them again. But, anyway, the man that was sitting next to me overheard the dealer talking about Ike's, and he started talking to me about them. He asked me if I had heard of the ike group and their books. Then he asked me if I've heard of the prototype ike. I said I had, and he said he was the first to find one. I was somewhat skeptical, so I looked him up after the show. Turns out it was him. I just thought it was kind of interesting. The show was in my hometown, which is pretty small, and it was held in the gym of the city's civic center. I know there aren't a whole lot of ike collectors, so I thought to myself that out of all the shows and all the dealer tables I could have sat down at, I sat there. Just thought it was interesting. Thanks for y'all's help.
