That feeling of disappointment, I know all too well I'm currently waiting for my Athalaric and the wait simply sucks... (seller told me 10 days, already been 4)
I'd leave vcoins alone if people stopped slagging ebay off. If people do not want to buy from ebay, then dont buy from ebay ....simple. I happen to have some superb and very nice rare coins on ebay at the moment, most of which are far better than vcoins samples of the same type.......I have no issue with vcoins apart from the inflated prices on some coins, but to argue that their fees justify that is absurd as ebay and paypal fees are equally silly. I got fed up with the ebay criticism on Forum ancients, because most of their members had bought from me in the past and I just cannot abide hypocrites.
If you are a collector or a student of coins, sooner or later you run across a coin that you really want in the stock of a seller that you find particularly repulsive for one reason or another. If you are a dealer or an investor, you buy and sell where the money is best. In either case it is not productive to swear off whole venues. That is a bit of the throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Certainly there are muddy bathwater dealers on eBay, on VCoins, at shows and in shops but equally certainly we will at some point have to decide whether we want the coin more than we want to stick with our political agenda. Many here will not understand this because their style of collecting allows finding a coin exactly like the one we don't want to buy in the stock of another seller. I rarely buy a coin where I saw two alike in the same month. One of our CT family just posted an antoninianus of Galerius that none of the rest of us were able to match. I decided I wanted to own any decent antoninianus of either of the First Tetrarchy Caesares and was able to find two for sale online today. My success was only made possible by my being willing to compromise and settle for a coin of different reverse and the other Caesar in a country I have never bought from and paying $14.80 postage. If your wants are a bit hard to find, you might want to avoid swearing off eBay, VCoins or whoever you have been choosing to avoid. My experience is that that will be the one who lists the coin of your dreams. I have examples but will not show since I might just find that lightning strikes twice and I need to buy another coin from 'him'.
I haven't swore off anybody for buying, my recent batch of 5 are 4 from ebay and 1 from vcoins. None of my recent ebay coins are auction wins strangely, i got a serious case of auction fatigue and went for a few "buy it nows" i found. I do sell a few little cheapies on ebay every once in a great while.
wise words Doug, I'll always stick up for ebay because I love it and discovering ebay years ago was one of the best things to have happened to me, providing me with years of fun.
For the record => those two new Alexandria TETs that I just purchased were from my e-bay guy!! (I guess e-bay is okay "if" you know and trust the seller!!)
I enjoy buying and selling coins and have had no bad experiences with ebay (minus one Canada Post lost package) so far but I have only been doing this for 2 months. If I won the lottery or something I would probably open up a vcoins store and still sell on ebay. I know there is a lot of crossover between Vcoins and Ebay. Ebay is an easy way to move the coins fast while the fixed price listing of vcoins a coin could be sitting there for months. I also know of a couple of ebay seller who were once on vcoins but did not like the direction it was taking and left. I think they mentioned there was an ownership change or something like that. I don't do much shopping on ebay any more. Only really for my Canadian and American coins. I don't really have the patience to search out the 'gems' right now. I still check my saved sellers for ancients but haven't put out a bid in a couple of months. Although I will be watching closely over the winter break since I expect some of those 'gems' to be going cheaply with people distracted by the holidays.
