unknown japanese coin

    actually sir, my first post with the two pics are of two different coins... the 2nd one is a morgan... i've posted the reverse side of the first coin...
    these are the front and back...

    Actually, I think it refers to the number of grains and fineness of platinum purportedly in the coin. The inscription on genuine Japanese silver of the Meiji era (1867-1912) was in the format listing grains of silver, denomination, fineness.

    Platinum had actually been used for coins in Russia in the early 19th Century, and although I have been unable to find any reliable information on its value in 1875 (the equivalent of Meiji 8, which is the date on the piece) it was extremely rare and it is entirely possible that 370 grains of platinum (about 24 grams) would have been worth 10,000 yen.
