Hi all, I recently took a gamble on a Morgan Dollar off of the good 'ol 'Bay. To me, the cheek appeared to be exceptionally free of marks/dings. However, I'm no Morgan Dollar expert...heck, I've never even owned a single one in my entire life. Am I right in assuming that this coin is slightly better than your average 63-64 range coin or am I actually looking at a cheek rub? (Seller's pictures below) Thanks! -CB
Considering the number of marks in the fields the cheek is remarkably mark-free. It's a bit baggie but I think it could make MS-63; definitely not -64.
Agree with the AU camp, at leas based on that picture--rub on cheek, hair, and motto "Liberty" AU 55 to me. Also rub on tips of feathers on reverse. No doubt in my mind as to being very lightly circulated.
Could be hence that would make it AU. But I don't toss out the possibility that the luster breaks are bag marks which allows it to still be MS.
Feels high au to me I see a touch of a rub on the highest points of the hair the eagles breast and wing tips I'd say au-55 maybe au-58 definitely a slider tho
Yes I guess, but if you do have it graded I would have the details box checked as you could have a Vam?1884-O?
Thanks all! I'm seeing the rubs you all are referring to; especially on the Liberty's ear and hair. Once I receive it in the mail I'll post a couple more pictures.
Just received the coin in-hand. What do you guys think? What appears to be lack of luster seems to be a fine layer of "dust" on the obverse.
Looks nice except for those hits on the neck. Looks like some wear on the hair over the ear, eagles wings. AU
I think it's a MS coin, probably a 63-64, because of weaker luster. I've seen plenty of Morgans just like that in MS holders. I think what a lot of people are calling wear (and they may be right), is actually an characteristic of the strike. Notice how weak the stars are struck, rim too, which indicating a metal flow problem (from either: improper annealing, low strike pressure, improper basining of the dies, or a combination of them). Also, you'll notice the stars have the same appearance as the ear and hair, it leaves a sort of muted luster, an almost frosty appearance (which would be the appearance of the actual planchet surface).
If it had a full strike imho i think it could be a 64 maaaybe 63 if there is wear i dont see any but if it was an au its au58 all day.
