I'm turning to the pros on Coin Talk to lend their expertise to give an unflinching critical appraisal of this 1896 Morgan. I just recently purchased a new camera for taking pics of coins and I don't know how to get the best out of it yet. I did the best I could with what I had. I tried to capture the coins in a variety of different lighting. I wanted the good, the bad and the ugly to be represented as well.

    So here it goes....

Greysheet bid is $35 for au I see a touch of a rub at the high points of the hair tho it's hard to see in the pics redbook retail value puts it at $65 I feel that would be a top price more like $55 I see ms examples selling regularly at auction around $60/95 they can. Be all over the place highly dependent on eye appeal I find it an attractive coin is hard to see the detail in the pics tho

If that's just bag rubs and a weak strike on the hair I'd say ms 63 I just can't tell from the photos

Looking at a more reliable source on recent sales, other than the outdated Red Book price guide, these in AU55 have sold for around $40 on eBay, and not many have sold as the sellers are asking ridiculously stupid asking prices for this date, low MS grades have been as Bkozak states, $35-$45.

    That's an MS63+ or an MS64, IMO.

Maybe it's the kind of lighting you're using, but I don't like the lack of luster. Based on these photos, I think it has been dipped a few too many times.

Chris, what Morgan hasn't been dipped? The surface is kind of flat on this one, though, and that is a symptom of over-dipping, true, as dipping does take the surface off, that's how it works.

Funny as I was thinking it didn't look dipped at all on the first 3 photos - then photo 319 does look a little dippy. This hobby sure does have a new facet in trying to figure out coin condition(s) from digital photos. It seems to be a large part of it now - esp. for collectors like me who don't get to many/any decent coin shows...
