well, here's the last of my coins. i was going to spend all my cash on one nice bronze, but couldn't find one i liked for a price i was willing to pay. so instead i purchased several budget coins that appealed to me for various reasons. here's the first one..... severus alexander AE sestertius march 234 ad- march 235 ad o: IMP ALEXANDER (PIUS AVG) r:sol buck naked except for a cape (chlamys) and a whip....or as i call it "evening attire". (P M TR P) XIII COS III (PP) ric 538 26x29x3mm 19.4g one thing that drew me to this coin is that it is dated (xiii on the reverse) and another is the size, big and heavy....feel great in hand...3mm thick. in the flip was a paper dated '84 in which the guy (or girl) wrote down all the details of the coin and them some, everything but the shoe size of the guy who struck it...and where it was minted ...was this in rome?
Sweet coin Chris, i love these great big pond skippers, what a thick puppy and still has good details with just a bit of a rub...
Neat addition. Yeah these guys are hefty coins Severus Alexander AE Sestertius. 235 AD. IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / P M TR P XIIII COS III PP S C, Sol walking left, holding whip and raising right hand, cloak billowing out behind. RIC IV 541; BMCRE 964
thanks all! this reverse drew me to this one, neat mountain, and it is dated. elegabalus 220 ad (year 3, correct?) o:i think the legend is AYKMAYPH AI ANTWNE (INOC) r:i MHTPO(PI)KAICAPIA C mount argeus atop altar, ET (gamma) not sure what is below? N E (lambda)? 26x28mm 10.0g seller has listed as syd 522a, but that doesn't quite match up. at first i thought my coin had a corroded area in the mountain, till i noticed most of the coins have that little "dip" in the top. here are some pics of the mountain today (in central turkey, a good ski spot..mount erciyes now).. and there is the "dip". guess this is an inactive volcano...neato.
Lovely reverse. I still want a coin with mount argeus on it too. They're easy to find but I just havent gotten around to getting one.
They must be fairly easy to find as I own two. Both are coins of Antonius Pius and are from Caesaria, Cappadocia: 1. AR Didrachm 2. AE20
wow dawg => that's another incredibly cool lookin' fatty!! ... so far, yer 2-fer-2 (sweet additions, my friend ... *sweet*) sadly, I don't have a mountain fat-boy to add to your thread (man, I need more coins!!)
thanks all! that first one is killer bing! anyone know the significance of the star that is usually above, but sometimes below the crater? a nice mountain coin would be a great wagon buster stevex....i give you permission to go ahead and buy one to post there.
Ummm, despite being back on the wagon, I've already made two bids on auction coins ... *sigh* => man, I'm the worst wagoneer, ever!!
Great coins Chris! To my knowledge, all the Mount Argeus types are from Cappadocia. Am I right? Or did another city also use the design?
thanks JA! in my limited searching trying to ID this coin, the only one's i've seen with mout argeus are from caesarea in cappadocia.
Imagine waking up every morning to a view of that mountain like in the first photo.... Oh and cool coin!
yes, that is a very cool sight, eh? Coincidentally, this is the view from the house where I grew-up (Victoria BC), looking across the ocean at your good ol' United States!! (Mount Baker, Washington State) ... my 90 year ol' father still lives in this house that he built over 60 years ago!!
Hey, that one house has a pool ... that's kinda the same thing, no? (no) Yah Jango, I sure grew-up in a wonderful place (I will go back home and retire there as well) ... I guess that's why I've been living in Northern Manitba for the past 23 years (I guess the whole life experience thingy has to even-out in the long-run?)
well, here's my last coin for a while...but finally showed up. philip i 244-249 ad commagene, samosata o: philip, AVTOK K M IOV FILIPP CEB r: tyche with eagle and peagsus, not sure on reverse legend.. (iota)A CAMOC ATEWNMHTP(o?) 31mm 19.1g BMC 44 (ish?) now i'm back on the wagon.
