I bought this counter stamped Manitoba dollar for $1 at the coin club last night. Thought it was kinda cool. Thought maybe GAN was just some random person's initials, and it was their date of birth and death, well I was half right. According to collector's universe thread I found on google: Above: Canadian nickel dollar, 1970 ( Manitoba Commemorative) counterstamped "G.A.N. / 1918-70" in oval on obverse. Commemorates the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1970. 1000 such overstruck coins were released in the Toronto area by the Arab League of Canada So it's kind of neat to own this, since there is only 1,000 of them floating around. What I find odd, is that the "70" is much larger than the 1918, it's almost like they made it before he died, and added the date when he died.
I have some counter stamped coins as well. I've sold some for a nice profit. There's definitely collectors out there for that sort of thing. Brazil produced many counter stamped coins when their currency got revalued by inflation.
Hey, you can't go wrong buying a counter-stamped one dollar coin for merely one dollar!! (it's a no-brainer) => great and interesting new pick-up!!
