First is an 1882-S and the second an 1896 Morgan. Please be as critical as possible. It won't hurt my feelings.
The y both look au around au-55 I haven't seen the 1896 has just a hint of wear at the high points I'd say au 55-58 its a slider the 1882 looks like it's been cleaned it doesn't have that cartwheel luster they usually have too matte and frosty but still a high au both nice looking coins tho
The 1882's may have been cleaned at some point in times-but how many old coins haven't. I acquired a few more hi-res pics of the coins at different angles. Each coin has, for lack of a better word crud all over the surface of the coin now and into the details of the coin. What follows are additional pics just of the 1882 coin. The very first pic "reverse 2" it appears to me it is simply dirt and grime that on the coin. The angle of the pic really points it out. After taking that in mind look at the others as well. The coin seems to have a layer of crud over every inch of the coin. This is the type of stuff I would come across in my business dealings when some one would walk in and say "hey', I found these dirty old coins my dad kept stashed in a coffee container, in his old workbench etc. Handled infrequently (if ever) and the young adults would come before they were just going to chuck the chainge away or go blow it at Wendy's. The guy selling them to me is not a coin guy, or girl, and really just wants some money for a dinner and a date Any opinions are appreciated. If what lies beneath the dirt and grime is a pretty sweet coin I would pursue it. It's just kinda hard to tell just from the pics. Taking into everthing I stated does the coin have the meat and potatos so to speak) to make the effort on my part worth it. Does the coin have the details needed along with the fundamenals?
I have to agree the first coin the 1882 would most likely get au55-58 the second would get Au details. Unslabbed and like this most like around 30-35 on the bay !!
As I said $50-60 retail not sure about ebay as I'm not on there but I'd say a fair price to buy would be around $35 ea I'd never clean them even tho the one appears to have been cleaned once it has appealing color now if I were to clean in anything it'd be nothing stronger than a soak in distiller water just looked current greysheet bid price for both in au is $35
Thanks for doing that. Just so I'm on the same page with you the grey sheet bid price is what a dealer would pay me?
no for these too most dealers would pay you most likely in the 20-25 dollars range maybe a little more or little less depending on the guy. Some might only offer you spot price !! Also glad i could help you out !!
I just created another thread with the same premise as the current one. In this case it an 1896 Morgan. If you guys desire check out the new thread. I promise lots of pics done very poorly. I would love to hear what you have to say.
