And a reeded edge half believe it or not my first one never owned one before I guess it's just something I've always overlooked but it fills a hole in my type set a good buy for $100 I think
The bust half has a bit of an irregular shaped and uneven thickness planchet but the edge lettering is in good shape so it hadn't been filed the lowest spots are where it's lettered half at 5 I clock
Opinions on grades my feel the draped bust f-12 and the capped bust xf- 45 both are raw and uncleaned a very tiny pinscratch on the draped bust is the only problem I see it may/may not be enough for a details is barely visible in hand but I appreciate your opinions / feedback
Won my first ever coin on Great Collections (also my first serious bid). $187 with all fees and shipping included, I think a very fair price for this CAC and nicely toned Type coin. One more down! Enjoy!
Congrats Geekpryde! GC is a great place to acquire coins. They will ship your coin in the mail tomorrow! They've recently improved their search function, but IMO, they still have a long way to go when it comes to navigating within their site. They are first class people at GC. I look their all the time. Thanks for the props for my latest addition! I can't wait to see it in my hands.
Is the pin scratch thru the hair? Honestly I think the pictures make them look like an old cleaning and a few hairlines under the left wind on the draped bust half - but all of that could just be the pictures. I think your grades are correct. Nice couple of coins no matter what.
The pinscratch Is through the hair correct the glossiness is from the light in the pics if they were cleaned they were just dipped not cleaned with any kind of abrasive and have retoned nicely fields are clean of any scratches except on the bust half and they almost look like die polishing marks I like to think I'm halfway decent at grading coins but I always like to hear a second opinion thanks!!
Frankly, if the only cleaning issue on a 140+ year old coin is that it lost some luster, I wouldn't care. That being said, I don't see any 'in your face' evidence of cleaning in your photos. I don't (yet) have any Draped Bust Halves (can't afford most of the ones I want). But I think your Capped Bust half is much nicer than this one I picked up last week. No, it isn't reeded. None of my Capped Bust Halves are yet. Too many of them out there as I struggle to complete my Overton list. Two websites Capped Bust collectors may appreciate. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/composite.aspx?c=2235 For all of the Overton varieties (558, yowza). If you are suspicious of a Capped Bust half, check out http://www.cccbhcc.com/ BTW, my favorite Capped Bust is an Overton 101a (pictured) from 1832. I acquired it, brought it to a coin dealer who immediately claimed it was fake because of the die flaw on the bird's wing which he took to be a mold sprue. LoL. Nope, real, but cleaned I think long ago so there is no luster.
That's a nice Benjamin. I like Benjamins. Grew up back in the days when my change at the candy store usually contained one. I miss those days. I miss corner candy news stores too. 7-11 just ain't the same.
I agree! It's a sweet coin. That made me go out and investigate Great Collections.... A new place to spend all my money.... I'm sure my wife'll appreciate it... lol
me I got a ton of capped bust halves quite a few draped bust too and one flowing hair but I didn't have a reeded for my type set I didn't need this 1807 I have a better one haven't attributed the die variety tho but it was a good buy
