Looking for some help identifying and attributing this 1810 Capped Bust half in my collection. The obverse looks like an Overton 101, but the reverse has a die crack that doesn't seem to match up with the photos I've seen for an Overton 101 reverse. The die crack in question flows thru the top of "UN" from United down into the leaves in the eagles claw, as well as another flowing from the tip of the eagle's wing.... Here are the photos that I was using of samples to match up: http://www.coinpage.com/Capped Bust Half Dollar-coin-pictures.html I am attaching the photos of my coin: Any help with grading would also be appreciated... Thank you!!!
I think it's a 101. Frank (Treashunt) or Rusty (Rzage) may or may not confirm my unlearned opinion........
Obv. looks stronger than the rev. But the coin looks like it was harshly cleaned at one point in time. Lots of surface scratches.
Agree with that... I took some better pictures just now - you can see what I think are die cracks on the reverse better. Will post below.
The 1810 CBHs have a well-known characteristically weakly struck wing on the viewer's left side. This makes grading this issue a bit less consistent than other issues.
I agree, it's a 1810 O-101, R-1. All the die cracks are characteristic of the die marriage. For the grade, like TomB said, almost all 1810's are weakly struck in the left wing and the curls of Miss Liberty, along with other areas. Sounders states in Capped Bust Fever, that the number of weakly struck pieces outnumber the well struck 8 to 1. The grade of your example, IMO, is VF details, cleaned. Jesse
Looks like you hit the nail on the head Ken , sure looks like an O-101 to me the only thing I can't see are 3 dots and a dash below the left claw , but with my eyesight what else is new . And I'd grade her VF harshly cleaned . Still a nice coin though .
All you guys make it easy . The ones that are hard are the ones from the '30s with a million die marriages .
