Good that I passed on this auction or not?

Item: Unsearched Estate Cent Roll with 1858 Flying Eagle / 1909 S? Indian Head Cent

    URL: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=380768760085

I have a Flying Eagle, but it isn't very nice. I've wanted to "upgrade". I graded this one at a F or VF (of what I could see). Redbook has that at $45-$60, but of course that number is high.

My main question is: these "unsearched roll" auctions are scans anyway, right? I mean, you'll get the coin(s) on the end, but are you telling me that they honestly didn't look through the rest and re-seal the roll?

yes, it is a scam. They put the rolls together, junk in the middle, less junky on the ends.

yes i believe most are scams, i had bought a so-called unsearched roll of wheats off the bay (luckily cheap) that showed a foreign coin on end which turned out to be dated 1981, theres a tool u can get that re-twists roll ends tight just like BRW's....

Definitely scams. Never bid more than what you are willing to pay for the end roll coins separately, and remember that you are only seeing one side of those. The rest of the roll will be common filler.

I just had someone buy a lower-grade 1908 S IHC from eBay...the buyer took a couple days to pay, so I started scanning their feedback. Turns out they sell "mixed rolls" that people have said contained two better coins and 40's and 50's junk...guess which two coins just happened to be on the ends? I wonder what this buyer is going to do with my IHC?

Just read a quote for the first time today, and I think it's appropriate here:

'Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again.' - Andre Gide

I can see it now...the reverse side of that coin showing at the end of the roll...with the S clearly visible. Then saying 1909-S IHC??? in this roll. It's all a scam.

Both coins at the end of this roll look like problem coins.

As others have said, these auctions are always a scam. No legitimate dealer in the world would sell such things.

Common sense should lead you away from these sales as fast as possible.

Yeah, I have more of what I like to call "un-common sense" ;-)

I almost bid, but that little nagging voice in the back of my mind won out... Thankfully.

I wish eBay would prevent these types of listings.

No way that roll wasn't searched.

In many instances, so are the people buying these "unsearched" rolls.

I would stay away from ALL of these type auctions on eBay.

I found a couple sealed rolls in our stuff as they have the banks name and information on the rolls

I made the mistake of buying an "unsearched" roll on the bay. I inquired about the roll that I received and one end was obviously opened once before I received it. He replied with some story that the rolling machine at the bank malfunctioned. I suppose that could happen... Then he said that he submits searched liberty nickels to his bank to have them rolled for a small fee. Then he sells the rolls as "unsearched" ha ha... He honestly searched through his nickels before he had them rolled so the rolls themselves are technically unsearched. I got a laugh out of that one.
