    Zeus has been depicted on so many ancient coins it might be nice to post a collection of them here at CT. Here is a Wikipedia link & a few coin photos to start this thread.

    6.14 grams, 21 mm
    Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right crowned with oak
    Rev: Athena Itonia advancing right brandishing a horizontal spear in right hand and shield in left hand. ΘΕΣΣΑ to left, ΛΩΝ to right, ΦIΛ-ΩN* above, and ποΛοΧοΣ below magistrates Hippolochos and Philon.
    Grade: Well centered about EF with gentle toning and attractive obverse field flow lines.
    Other: Good style similar to Sear 2232, BMC 3,34. BCD Thessaly II 869.2 [Double Victoriatus = 1.5 Denarii]. Ex La Galerie Numismatique (Heritage Jan 2013) lot 61035 From Eye-Appealing Coins April 2013.

    17.06 grams, 26 mm diameter
    Obv: Head of young Herakles facing right clad in lion’s skin
    Rev: Zeus enthroned facing left with legs parallel holding eagle and scepter. Serpent in a bowl to left, AΛΕΞΑΝΑΡΟΥ to right.
    Grade: GVF with attractive old toning and lustrous details in the protected areas. Slightly off center on small flan.
    Other: Coveted lifetime issue coin with snake monogram possibly from the 'Babylon', 'Pella', or 'Sardes' mint. Similar to Sear 6724, Price 3665 Variant.

    AR Tetradrachm
    Babylon mint 317-305 B.C.


    16.93 grams, 26-27 mm diameter
    Obv: Head of young Herakles facing right clad in lion’s skin
    Rev: Zeus enthroned facing left with legs crossed holding eagle and scepter. ΜΗΡ in wreath monogram to left, AΛΕΞΑΝΑΡΟΥ to right, MI below throne & ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ in ex.
    Grade: gVF with old cabinet tone. Enthroned Zeus is nicely centered and Herakles obverse is off center.
    Other: Posthumous issue in the name & types of Alexander III (The Great). Similar to Sear 6829 except minted with Alexander’s name, Price 3746, SC 82.5a.

    16.68 grams, 29 mm.
    Obv: Diademed head facing right
    Rev: Zeus Standing Left holding star & sceptre with crescent over head; two monograms to outer left, [IPP] (date) in exergue, BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTIOXOY right EΠI.ΦANOYZ to left of Zeus, all within laurel wreath.
    Grade: VF+ nicely toned.
    Other: Antiochos VIII Epiphaes was a Seleukid King of Syria nicknamed Grypos (hook nose). Grypos was essentially the last of the Seleukid Kings of Syria. This Damaskos mint coin is dated SE 197 (116/5 BC). Similar to Sear 7143; SC 2323.5b; HGC 9, 1197f. From Sphinx Numismatics Oct. 2014.

    Wow, that's a nice bronze. Everyone seems to clamor for Greek silver, which is fine of course, but finding Greek bronze this nice is much tougher.

    i could never figure out what this was exactly, seller had it as "ptolemy viii"...but the reverse was to far gone for me to pin it down. anyone know?


    offtopic...but here's what my deck looked like 10 minutes ago...note the 10 gallon fish tank. i cleaned that out two days ago and left it to air dry (it was mid 60's)....then got lazy and forgot abou it. not in the 60's anymore!

    Zeus may have had something to do with your snow. After all, he is the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology.
