Ramping Up the Pressure on Myself

I'm having trouble finding 2 coins to complete a set.
Not expensive; each cataloging less than $200.
But they have to be slabbed by PCGS or NGC so I can put them in an NGC Registry Set.
Naturally one of the problems is that sub-$200 coins don't get slabbed nearly as often as pricier coins.

So now I'm putting myself under pressure to buy raw coins that will slab to my specifications.
The two coins are silver Roosevelt dimes, so:
-- I want them to be Full Torch (the easier of my two requirements; I shouldn't have a problem with this)
-- I want them to be MS-66, definitely not MS-65; I'll go with an MS-67 as a last resort (I'm trying to complete a matched set at MS-66)
    And there's my problem.
I need to be able to grade a coin as MS-66.
The ANA grading guide doesn't even define MS-66 for Roosies; it does MS-65 and MS-67.
And as most people know the difference between the 3 grades is almost subjective, not objective.

I think I'll start by looking for the two Roosies I want already slabbed MS-66 and determine if they'll qualify for the FT attribute.
I really dread going the raw coin route.

    Any suggestions?

My guess in this scenario is that being patient and waiting to buy what you need is going to be cheaper and less frustrating than buying raw, submitting etc.

I agree with Geoff. You're going to encounter more frustration and expense going the other way Kanga.

I agree. With most things in coin collecting, patience is your friend. Have you checked pop reports? I am pretty sure they exist. Have you reached out to a good dealer and have him search for you? A good dealer is one of your best assets in completing a set. He sees a ton more coins than you, and can ask around to other dealers more easily than you can.

MS-66 - Has above average quality of surface and mint luster, with no more than three or four minor or noticeable contact marks. A few light hairlines may show under magnification, or there may be one or two light scuff marks showing. Eye appeal is above average and very pleasing for the date and mint. If copper, the coin displays original or lightly toned color (which must be designated).

I know this is a general grading standard for MS66 and not series specific; however, you could apply it to grading Roosies.

I'll pile on with everyone my friend.

    #1 Buy them certified.

#2 Tell us which dates you need & we can all help you find the elusive coins.

#3 As Medoraman already said: "patience is your friend".

#1 Been trying for 2-3 years. Now will look at certed ones that are graded -66 and see if I think they will get the FT attribute.

#2 I didn't mention the dates because I didn't want to be accused of "fishing".
But they are 1949-(P) and 1961-(P).

#3 Unfortunately patience is running very short after 2-3 years. It's not that they show up overpriced; they don't show up at all.

Oh come one sir. You are more patient than that. I posted elsewhere a recent pickup I made. It was a reasonably priced gold coin of Theoderic. You know how long I was looking? Over a decade. I have about 20 other coins just like it I am still hunting for. I had another I have been looking for just get away from me. That coin might appear once a year at ANY price, if then. Yeah, I wish I would have got it, but know I get the thrill of still looking for one for free.

The thrill is in the hunt, not the kill. I will bet you a denari that 6 months after you have bought these two coins the thrill of the complete matching set will be gone. You will not have the obsession that tracking these down today gives you. :) I have never completed a set of any coins without being felt let down afterwards. I used to wonder about guys like Brown who collect a set of large cents, sell them, then start to collect all over again. Now I get it.

    True.
But I would still get the thrill of having completed and owning the set.
I have several other sets that are now just sitting in the bank but I know I have them.
And I can move on to another set; this set is one of those.

Thanks for doing some legwork for me.
The only one that might qualify is the last one you listed.
Some of the others definitely won't.

And one other problem which the last one is a example of is that the listing violates eBay policy.
    To quote:
" Coins minted before 1980 must show the full front and back of the holder. Coins minted in 1980 or after must show the full front of the holder. "
And since I report listings that violate this rule I can't in good conscience bid on such a listing.
Bummer but I've got to stay on the up-and-up.

Too bad you need ms-66 because I have a 1949 rainbow colored in MS 65 by PCGS

Look on the great collections auction site. I have picked up a 49 P and 49 S full torch there within one month span. They might have an MS66 there now for around $260
