Okay yah, I admit that it's only been one month on the ol' wagon, but man, it seemed like an eternity!! Oh and wow => I got totally smoked at today's auction, but I did manage to emerge with 2 new ancients (yup, it felt mighty good to be pressing that ol' bid-button once again!!) BID-BID-BID-BID-BID-BID-BID => aaaaahhhhhhwwwwhhhhhh ... that's the one!!! ... anyway ... => Here is my first coin (yah sure, I already own that Agrippa-Augustus croc-coin, but I didn't have a solo Augustus coin ... so, when I saw this fine specimen, I took careful aim and then pulled the trigger) SPAIN, Celsa. Augustus. Æ As L. Baggius and Mn. Flavius Festus, duoviri 27 BC-AD 14 Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 11.40 grams Obverse: Laureate head right Reverse: Bull standing right, head facing Reference: ACIP 3164c; RPC I 273 Other: 1h … brown patina with tan high points Ex Archer M. Huntington Collection (HSA 1001.57.5263) ===>>>> Moooooooooo, brothers!!
Super coin as always Steve! I love the over-sized letters on that coin and the way the inscription is sprinkled all over the reverse, as if Picasso engraved it.
Thanks JA ... yah, I thought it looked quite "out there" for a Roman coin as well => I love it ... thanks for your comments (I value your opinion)
The Spanish colony coins have always interested me - it's an area I'd like to explore some more. This coin is now ex-JA, but it got me looking into issues of this region a bit more... Caesar Augustus, 63 BC - 14 AD AE Semis, 21mm, 4.73g, 9h; Colonia Patricia, 19/18 - 2 BC Obv.: Bare head left; PERM CAES AVG Rev.: Apex (left) and Simpulum (right); COLONIA PATRICIA Reference: RPC 130, Lindgren 88
I see why the wagon fell, the bull got unhitched from it Nice coin, I have come close to buying a tiberius of that type in the past but I didnt like the price or they got sold before I had the funds.
Thanks for the coin-compliments, dudes ... yah, I like this cute ol' bull-coin => I am really hoping that it's gonna be kinda like all of my other sestertii and my AE Asses => they are always by-far my favourite coins to fondle "in-hand" ... know what I mean? (28 mm and 11.5 grams => that's a nice feelin' coin ... especially a nice dark brown baby, with brassy high-lights!! ... yah, I can hardly wait to get baby home!!)
Would have been a pity to miss it, the portrait is of good style and what a powerfull bull : frightening ! Q
Very nice Jerry, but what happened to the wagon? I'm still on it. Ten weeks now. Oh the shame of it. But I do like your new bull.
That sure was a nice bunch of Spanish provincials in that auction, huh? I'd love to have bought bunches of them. You picked up a nice one!
Thanks TIF ... yah, I know that I'm gonna love this coin, forever!! (it's just one of those sweet, warm babies ... it feels nice in-hand, it looks good to the eye .... awwwww, let's just snuggle-up and go for a quick nap in the afternoon) ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Oooops, but yes => there were all a lot of winners in today's auction => I could have blown my X-mas load!!
Oh => please feel free to post any similar coins ... I know/assume that Augustus is one of the more popular/collected Roman rulers? Ummm, sorry that I haven't been paying attention to my thread ... I was making Curried Chicken and Wild Rice for dinner (my wife was quite impressed with my efforts)
Made dinner to keep you out of trouble, good plan Steve, awesome new coin, like that big o'l bull, very nice, two thumbs up...
You really fell off the wagon in style! I counted about a dozen of those colonial Spanish bulls in that auction, and I reckon yours is just about the nicest one. I wasn't prepared to pay quite that much for one of them, so I ended up paying more for two of them (yeah, I can't say I'm terribly proud of that scintillating bit of logic). That Huntington auction really had some very nice Spanish ancients. I'll post mine when they arrive in the mail.
=> Thanks for the coin-kudos, gang ... I am very happy with my choice (oh, but yes, there certainly were a whole lotta nice Spanish ancients in that auction ... I look forward to seeing everybody else's purchases!!)
Here is another one of my Spanish bull coins ... yah, you guys have seen this baby before, but I merely wanted to give it a walk around the ol' stable to stretch its poor ol' legs!! (Moooo!!) => this is what a Spanish As can look like if it's not treated with love & respect: TIBERIUS AE As Tiberius – Caesar 8-14 AD Tiberius – Augustus 14-37 AD Clunia, Spain Diameter: 28 MM Weight: 13.9 GRAMS Obverse: TI CAESAR AVG F AVGVSTVS IMP, laureate head right, countermark of bull rushing right on Tiberius' neck Reverse: L IVL RVF T CALD CON T POMP LON P IVL NEP IIII VIR, Bull facing left, CLVNIA above, countermark of eagle's head on bull Other: AB-839 … RPC-456 These countermarks both date to the reign of Emperor Claudius, and are probably intended to validate the coin for continued circulation as Claudius engaged in a number of mint closures and monetary reforms (Seller’s comments)
BOOM wagon! that's a beautify coin...augustus Spanish coins are fantatic...super color also. that coin was one I shopped seriously for on my current wagon falling....but couldn't quite pull it off this time. As of now...I'm back on the wagon however...but have a few incoming. Stupid wagon.
=> wow, the ol' Purina dog-chow wagon really took a tumble, eh? Thanks for the coin-compliments ... yah, we're all jumping back onto the wagon during the Christmas season (I guess it's time to spend a bit o' cash on our loved ones)
So, now I have company eh? Hey, it's gettin' crowed here. Watch those elbows!!! Steve, keep your hands to yourself!!! Chris, if I have to stop this wagon you're gonna be sorry!!
