Yeah..see that's my problem - I just don't have the eye to tell if they are cleaned or not. I can tell with the harsh cleaning (the hairline gashes and all) but not with the dipping or anything milder like that. I went for the one in question because I really didn't realize it was cleaned and I thought it was just a huge steal. At XF, the trend is significantly higher than $100.00
Damn..I'm really going to try hard to see if the seller will let me off the hook on it. I actually asked them way before I bid and they told me "Well I haven't cleaned it myself and it looks uncleaned and really nice to me" Haha I shouldn't have trusted that
If he has any sense he will cancel your bid. He has a seven day return policy anyway so I can't see him wanting to send it off knowing it will come back, have to issue a refund, petition for a refund of his fees to eBay blah blah.... That sucks to have to deal with.
Dude ... sadly, I think that this coin is an VF, at best ... sure, it is kinda pretty to look at, so if you're "not" gonna sell it, then who cares? ... but if your master-plan is to flip this coin as an XF then I think you've failed (hopefully I'm incorrect)
Yes I hope it doesn't come to all that hassle. I think you're right though - he will most likely not give me a hard time, especially with the return policy anyway.
Haha thanks for the input. My new master plan now is to just get a refund back from the seller because I think, with all of the veteran knowledge here, that this coin has been tampered with (i.e. cleaned).
Well => good luck ash-dawg!! => I am very sorry to hear that you have to go through this unpleasant process (nobody likes confrontation and/or shady business transactions!!) ... good luck, coin-comrade!! cheers!!
Yeah I know right. When I asked about the cleaning they really made it seem like it definitely was authentic. Since I don't have much experience I trusted it. Well I guess I gotta live and learn!
Well he at least has a return policy . It's definitely nicer than VF , IMHO . If you look at the coin , you can see where the dark color is uneven , usually if it has darkness like that it will be pretty evenly spread in all the devices especially the lettering . This one has almost straight lines of dark color that usually doesn't happen in circulation . Also please check the weight .
Well, it looks like an OK coin and if they increase in value that much 1 grade higher, I'd prolly keep it. But if you don't know for sure don't speculate. It's actually VERY hard to get a bargain on the Bay.... Millions of collectors make it that way. Just an FYI though, you don't have to rely on the seller to cancel your bid..... You can retract it yourself. Here's the link: http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBidShow&guest=1
Other than the cleaning, the coin is really nice I think. I barely even see a nick anywhere on either side..it's a shame that someone would have cleaned it (that is, if it is even a real silver 50 cent piece)
Yeah I know about that - thing is, it doesn't work if the auction is ending in 12hrs or less (which it is in my case). But I don't think it really matters anyway...his policy does say a 7 day return. Yes, I've really started to realize that it is hard to get a bargain pretty much anywhere online. I guess I should follow the crowd on this one...since no one else was bidding, there most definitely is something up that I just didn't notice.
I think it's ok , but her chin worries me a little . It looks weak . But I really don't know this coin too well , and the chinese fakes (some of them) have gotten quite good .
the "n" and "t" in the cents are clearly worn off at very localized spots. the field the wreath is on is tarnished whereas within the inner field it is uniformly clean, save for the spots around the letterings which the person obviously couldn't be bothered with understandably. to top it off, I think I see localized wear on Victoria's hair just off her left cheek. I avoid all coins that are dirty specifically around the letterings and small corners but are otherwise very clean. another thing to look out for, if there were pictures, is if there are obvious differences in color tone between the face and the rim of the coin. and if you find a coin that has details worn down but is devoid of toning (unless made of very unreactive metal like gold perhaps), it's definitely been clean. I fell for this when I started the hobby months ago, although it was only $8. you can actually retract your bid if you can find the item number, which I did through my e-mail when I first bid on an item, and then cancelling the bid using the bid retraction form but I just realized that you can't retract it within the last 12 hours unless you've just bid on it within this timeframe. like what the others say, make use of the return policy. hope everything goes well!
There's still 2 hours and 45 mins according to the link you provided. Retract your bid. Make it easy.
The mouth doesn't look right, and gaps in details like the bridge of the nose, front of neck and in the hair bun are suspicious. It looks like the coin was made this way rather than actually having real wear. If not for curiosity sake, I would pass on this one. Too many concerns.
I hope you can get out of this auction and cancel your bid. That is a made-in-China counterfeit coin. Sorry I did not post earlier, I was waiting to get confirmation from Mike Marshall, who has been combatting Canadian and NFLD counterfeit coins on eBay for a number of years. The bridge of the nose and truncation of the jaw to neck were the big red flags to me, combined with a general flatness of the fields. I have reported the item to eBay, which I hope helps. If you are going to dive into NFLD and Canadian coins in a serious way, then a definite must is knowing how to identify the counterfeits that are out there. Like I said in my earlier posts , that softness in the jaw really bothered me . Sorry for the op but now he can get out of it or return it . Thanks for confirming what I and a few others thought . I do love this series and have a couple that Mike Marshal sold me that I love . Man do I hate counterfeiters .
