Hey guys. I am just wondering if anyone has an opinion on this... I can't decide if this coin would be XF or AU. I know it couldn't pass as MS but I was hoping for Almost circulated. Let me know what you think ! ( I just purchased the coin off of ebay and these are the only pictures I have) I also suspect that this coin might have an error on the "C" in "CENT." To me - it looks like the "C" might have some doubling within the arc of the letter. I looked it up and found another 1899 10 cent coin with the double "C" error and it seems like this one could have it too. Not 100% sure though!
Sorry to always be the bearer of bad news but no way this coin get AU maybe if your lucky ef40 but i am thinking this coin will get more in the range of vf30 sorry to say !
Nice small 99 example ashikunn, I'd put it around VF30 too; think you may be right about the C in Cent
Yeah ahha...you just like to do that to me, huh ? I really still have a lot to learn about grading I guess. I can't understand why this would be VF, despite most replies agreeing with you. I see XF for sure and I honestly didn't think AU but I was just hoping that there was some possibility - guess not!
XF coins will show a decent amount of wear only on the higher points where a VF coin will show some wear over most of the devices of the coin. It's a subtle difference, but one that will become obvious as you look at tons of coins. Dealers can usually grade pretty well because they examine dozens if not hundreds of coins per day. It's a bit different for collectors though, we just don't see or examine that many coins. A tip that my grandfather taught me when I was about five was to grade every coin that you get in your change. By doing this, you really get a feel of how wear occurs. For the past thirty years or so I have done this, and it has served me pretty well. It just takes a bit of time.
Yeah that's a good idea. I actually do try to do that as much as possible with my change. I'm referring to my book "A guide book of Canadian Coins and tokens" and it's really not really informative. Using that guide is how I thought that this coin should be XF. Oh I have one question though: I had thought that the only thing that really mattered was the Bust of the coin and the surrounding did not really matter (for anything below MS coins). Is that not true ? Does it matter if there are nicks and scratches surrounding the queen?
I should mention that I grade based on ANA standards which would certainly consider all of the coin as a basis for grading. If a Canadian comany uses different standards, I couldn't say, but I have never noticed any real difference with their grades and I've collected Canadian large cents for years using several different grading services.
