Anyone know the variety? I know there's a lot for 1827 and I'm still searching for my Overton book. The rotation is just how the picture shows it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You've got an 1827 O-114, R-3. Some die characteristics to look for are a small die defect in the left branch of Y in LIBERTY, and A3 and upper arrowhead barely touching on the reverse.

The 3rd edition of Overton lists this variety as an R-4 but it was later downgraded by the BNHC and noted as an R-3 in the 4th Edition of the Overton guide.

BTW, it is often a very long process attributing 1827 Bust Halves using Early Half Dollar Die Varieties, using Glenn Peterson's book, speeds up the process tremendously.

Unfortunately, I've yet to buy the book needed to attribute Reeded Edge Bust Halves, though I've been meaning to for a while. The book needed is A Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars by Dick Graham, these coins are attibuted by GR variety. I'd be happy to attributed any other Bust coin you have though.

RE half dollars do not go by Overton number, but Dick Graham and I published a definitive reference book on RE half dollars last year and it has since sold out. However, I do believe there are some copies available from at least two specialist book sellers. The RE half dollars are given GR numbers (Graham-Reiver) and I would have to check my own copy to help you with the die marriage.

Where would we find the two book specialists

Both Dave Kahn and Rich Uhrich have been carrying this book, but I expect others may have copies, too. We were selling these for about $60 per copy and they sold out quickly on our end. I mentioned it previously, but will do so again; when we started to sell this book at the Philadelphia ANA in 2012 I had dozens of collectors pore through the book and then ask a price. When told the price they nearly unanimously said they were interested, but I only sold one copy to a collector. In contrast, when I told dealers the price nearly every dealer stated "it's a bargain" and purchased at least one copy. I left the show with fewer than two dozen copies remaining in my portion of the inventory. Shortly after the show I was all out as each major auction house and coin grading firm got in touch with me and purchased multiple copies. If I recall correctly, Dick and I published perhaps 500-copies of the first edition.

We later had seven individually numbered leather-bound copies made. Dick has one leather-bound copy, I have another (copy number one) and I gave one out as a gift. I know where three of the remaining four copies went, but do not know who obtained the seventh leather-bound copy.

Attributing RE half dollars is much more difficult than earlier half dollars, but your appears to be a GR-13, which is an R1. It has reverse K, but this was paired with obverse 10 and obverse 11 and in your image I have some doubt about which obverse you have. However, it looks more like obverse 10, which is why I call it a GR-13. This die marriage comes nice and is quite common.

Thanks Tom! Just got in contact with Rich about the Peterson book, I'll have to ask him if he still has any of those left.

    Much appreciated!

I picked one up at the 2012 ANA - from Dick.
So, I guess 2 collectors bought one. :)
I wish I had known about the leather edition.

    To everyone else, great reference

Got mine from Rich on Saturday, it's a very nice book. Got that along with the Peterson Bust book. Very happy with both books from him.
