i try to get half dollar rolls whenever possible. I go thru them for silver and anyones I need for my dansco. i spend the rest ...most cashiers dont know what they are. I had one rude cashier with them who ended up thinking they were dollar coins gave me change for dollar. most of the time I correct them and tell them there only 50 cents except when there rude. does anyone else spend halves and run it to any probs with it.
Not yet. I was going through my 40% silver halves to put them into plastic coin tubes and found a '71 mixed in there with them. I'm gonna go spend it and see what the reaction is. I also have about 6 worn down Ikes i don't really want. Maybe i'll go buy a cup of coffee and pay with two Ikes and the Kennedy.
Spending them can be quite an experience. The more halves you use the wider the range of responses you'll get. Some people don't know what they are, or will automatically assume they are worth a dollar simply because they are larger in diameter than a quarter. Others are convinced that they are rare, no matter what the year or condition, and that makes you crazy for spending them. Some people get ticked because there is no change slot in their cash register for them.
I have been going through rolls also, and at some of the regular spots I spend them, they know me as the halves guy. (Is this good or bad?)
I cleaned out my local banks... I ended up with 3 tubes of silver Kennedy's and a couple of Franklins by buying up their hand rolls of halves. I was lucky, and got this many in only about 12 rolls. I then hit a dry spell and only newer Kennedy's thereafter, till driving through a town with an old independent bank in Wisconsin (no idea where I was, I was headed to Stoughton.) I had a 20, so I bought 2 rolls and nearly one full roll ended up being silver. Got me keyed up to find more.
Great finds! Getting silver Kennedys is DEFINITELY hit or miss...I've gone for more than a month of regular searching without finding ANY 40/90 silver halves. *sigh*
Just used Kennedys to pay the tolls back and forth to the FUN show. I also like dollar coins for tolls and such. Very convenient.
I get a lot of puzzled looks from younger cashiers, when I spend the leftovers from my roll-searching.
today at the local supermarket cashier had to ask the manager if they accepted half dollars luckily they said yes
I've been giving my son all the kennedys from rolls that I've gone through. He's 21 and in school full-time, so he always needs money. He buys gas for his car and then pays with a bunch of kennedys. Gets some strange reactions!
used 3 Ikes at the supermarket today cashier said she hadnt seen them in years. teenage cashiers were trying to tell her they were only half dollars. always something lol
i give the Ikes with tips and toss in a $2 note its great. took me while to get any Ikes thou...much easier to get $2 notes from banks
I had a peculiar reaction with a S.B.A at the local food store. I had added up my change which included a S.B.A. and I had enough, I went to pay, the clerk counted it up, and told me that I was 75 cents short. I should have guessed what she had done, but I didn't, so I put an item that cost a dollar back, and she gave the S.B.A. back to me. I mentioned it to her and she said, "really". So she looked at it closer and said, "oh....." and handed me my receipt. She probably stared at me the entire time I was walking out. So who says that fun in collecting coins is just the search and the finding. I say it's that and the reactions you get when you filter out the rare, but not really rare coins and spend them.
Agreed - Generally I get the same reaction. The other day I paid for a quick lunch at Costco and the lady's eyes got big as she motioned to her coworker to look at what she had just been given. :smile Even funnier is the reaction from some of the bank employees I ask for rolls. One young lady at a credit union almost responded like she had never heard of such a thing. It's fun to see the reaction regardless of good or bad as you have generally done something related to money that is completely unexpected.
if you really want to have wicked fun, tip waitresses with japanese occupation money. leave a 500 japanese peso note as a tip.
I've gotten plenty of crazy looks. I've never had a problem where they didn't want to accept it. I try not to spend more than a few bucks at once either. I did give a cashier a mixture of half dollars and sacs once, and she ended up miscounting, but once I said, that's a dollar and those are half dollars, she was ok.
