Coin is legit, on a tablet so I am too lazy to look up full attribution. In that shape its worth maybe $30. Little more if there is a war for it. Animals are popular.
Gallienus, AE antoninianus, Rome. Sole reign. IMP GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right / DIANAE CONS AVG, Doe walking right looking backwards. Epsilon in exergue. RIC V-1, Rome 176 (S); Sear 10199 var. RSC 154
Most of my zoo series coins of Gallienus cost me less than $20 each. I have one with the Pegasus that cost me $28, but the average of the rest is around $12-$15.
The coin in that condition is worth about £15 GBP, the reverse is not very good, but its a nice portrait.
Thanks for all your help gentlemen !! !i haven't seen 2 many of these zoo animals for cheap lately this one was a nice pick up !! Thanks for all your help on this coin i can't weight to get it !! it will be a great piece to have !!!
The price quotes in this thread are spot on. The Gallienus animal coins are a dime-a-dozen in poorly-struck examples, especially when it comes to the more common types, like the doe, stag, and antelope. Well-struck, well-preserved examples are tough to come by, and consequently far more expensive. This gives me a chance to post my recently-acquired panther, which is in some ways a "best of type" coin. I've never seen a stronger panther reverse. (Sorry for bragging.)
Great looking coin john !! it seems the observe is much stronger then the reverse and a lot of examples i found on line the animals on the back were very weak like the one i have purchased !!
Quality control went to hell during Gallienus' reign. Nobody's quite sure why, but if you want to see a lot of crappy coins, he's your man. Everything that could be wrong with them is: poor alloy mixes, untrimmed flans, amateurish engraving, weak strikes. So finding better examples is a hunt - I looked at dozens of panthers for half a year before that one came up at auction.
John is very right in that the price of these depends a lot on condition. The stag I show was $13 in 2012 while the panther (better looking) was $20 that same day from the same dealer at a show. John's panther has better cat details and nice surfaces but terrible centering so there might be some discussion as to whether it is worth multiples more than mine but a coin with perfect centering, bold strike, good surfaces and that cat (best panther face I have seen) all on one coin would be at least four times those prices. Panthers bring a bit more than deer so I'd say Bing's $12-15 is fair. There is nothing rare about the zoo coins. To hit $20 we need a fully struck body and much of the legends with attractive (not perfect) surfaces.
Very very nice reverse, if only they had struck it centrally whilst the rev die was fresh and sharp and it'd be a gem.........I'll try and post pics of my zoo reverses.
I'd like to see them! The centering on my coin is unfortunate, but it's always a trade-off with Gallienus.
Doh!! .... oh sorry, I meant Doe!! => great new coin, Sean the Coin Collector!! (congrats) ... I don't have an example of a Doe ... I do however, have an average, kinda watered-down version of a panther:
I'm very fond of this one myself, but it seems that at $50 I probably overpaid for it. It has a provenance (ex Baron Louis Chaurand collection), but I know that for some people that makes not one whit of a difference.
