I think all retailers, fast food places, and other business should be cash free in 10 years or less. I do not wish to see cash eliminated, because you will still need it for places like flea markets, older vending machines, car washes, etc. There is no positive to spending cash at a retailer. 1. When you spend cash, you receive change. You have to eventually have to do something with that change and the change takes up space. 2. Spending cash makes the line slower, as the cashier must count your money being given, and then count your change. This holds true especially when the elderly have to count out change. 3. Spending cash transmits colds and flus, as God knows where the money passing hands has been. Many older people lick their fingers before handing people money, which can transmit potentially deadly virus and bacteria into the hands of the cashier. Believe it or not, if someone with HIV licks their fingers before handing you money, and then you pick at your teeth , itch your nose,or rub your eye, you can contract it. 4. Cash takes up space. Armored vehicles have to transport it bank to business, and then back again. A debit card is small and can replace the space tens of thousands of dollars take up. 5. Cash means people have to be hired to count the cash, making for higher expenses on the business end for cash office employees. 6. Cash can be stolen, if a thief steals your wallet full of $1,000, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye. If a thief steals your credit or debit card, you can report it lost and the card ceases to function. 7. Cash was necessary before the days of electricity and computers. Cash is a obsolete payment method, quite frankly. 8. You can carry a debit or credit card with $50,000 on it, and no one will ever notice. It's a little hard to carry $50,000 in cash without it being evident. 9. It's possible for a cashier to give you back the wrong amount of change, resulting in you being short. Computer error is much smaller than human error. 10. Con artists can "quick change" a cashier, or rob them at gunpoint. When people quit using cash, at a retailer, the retailer won't be robbed for money, and could even put up a sign that reads "Business does not use cash, robbery is pointless". Again, I'm not saying cash should be eliminated, but in 10 years, I would like to see major retailers stop accepting cash. BTW, I have this posted on another site, so no, I'm not copy-writing.
That may be so, but you can still get viruses from shopping online... Cash is obsolete? Tell that to the billions of people around the world, including those that cannot afford the cost of having money in a bank or having a credit card, who use cash in everyday transactions. Do you not realize that credit card fraud has only become more common and more damaging as people buy more cards? According to multiple sources, cash transactions have been at an all-time high in the past few years... If you think that credit transactions are totally secure, then I have a cousin who is a Nigerian Prince and wishes to share his royalties with you. All you need to do is send me $1,000 to cover the fee of sending you the money...
OK, let us look at this. One - Change is good, you can search the coins. Two - Not a problem. Three – ewwwwwwwwwww. 4-5 blah 6 – Cyber theft! 9 except that I can count and only argue when I am shorted but not when I receive a windfall 10, can they no longer just rob them of stuff? You are copy righting, but if what I think you are trying to say is true, you are not stealing, plagiarizing, or violating anyone's copyrights, amirite?
I also do not understand why people use checks at a retailer. Not when many banks offer a completely FREE debit card. If someone was to get ahold of your checkbook, you just gave them a carte blanche to your money. I understand using a check for a mail in payment, since checks are cheap and money orders are not, and sending cash via mail is a dumb idea.
No cash = our paranoid government(s) will know every transaction you make, where, when, to whom, in what country, etc., etc., and match the results against your reported income, and warn (or track) you if you are found to be buying guns, ammo, precious metals, or, hoarding food. Or worse, confiscate such items on the authority of their unlimited police powers masquerading as "national security concerns". Is this the way you want to live your life? BTW, I look for Bitcoins to be outlawed in the U.S., soon, on the grounds they enable tax evasion.
I agree. As a libertarian I usually use cash for buying stuff I frankly do not think its anyone elses business what I buy, like coins, pm, artwork, etc. I use them for business expenses and things like gas and groceries, which I do not care who knows. Speaking of bitcoins, the hackers might get them before any government does. Have you seen the string of bitcoin thefts recently? I do expect a crackdown on having to report to the IRS any virtual currency wallets though. Technically they fall under reporting requirements for savings accounts unless domestic, and then the wallet holders fall under reporting guidelines.
It will never happen there's still many people who don't trust banks I know quite a few that have no bank account and no credit card or an account with a very minimal balance so they can cash checks also many people like cash because it can't be traced it can be used for purchases that you don't want any kind of a paper trail on also there's a whole lot of us good old boys that have jArs full drawers full a safe full etc I recently over the last couple months have gotten several thousand in cash from a customer various times that's been stored somewhere that it's beginning to decay around the edges and has gotten moldy you can smell it none of these bills are newer then 1996 there's LOTS of people who never deposit cash in the bank they just store it or spend it it would take a lot more than 10 years for it to all get back on the market and if retailers stop taking cash customers will go somewhere else this is why cash will never go away I'm sure in my lifetime
No. I simply grabbed a section of text from Detecto's first post and placed it into Google and followed the hit. Simple.
Amen to this the last thing I want is big brother looking over my shoulder and I don't want the government or thieves knowing what guns ammo coins gold silver I'm buying or anything else that's none of their business I had my credit card information stolen earlier this year by someone who hacked into the computers of someone I'd purchased something from I got my money back but it was a real pain since I was out of town and it was the only card I have which I use for fuel hotels food and other business expenses especially when I travel this has made me even more paranoid about using a card I'd much rather bring a roll of cash and my p-228 sig which my concealed carry permit is good for in 22 states unfortunately not the 3 I most want it in
