http://www.gladwinmi.com/placed/story/01-02-2007change.html he gets $1,000 in change a year? thats $2.74 in change a day! thats crazy!
I save all my change from everyday purchases, sometimes it's .11 cents to 3 or 4 dollars a day, we usually use it for vacation
I only use cash and do amost the same thing he does---we save it up and then go on a trip----we don't normaly take a "vacation" every year but just take few days off every now and then---we have found a place we like to go and so I save up enough to get a room or two there and then maybe alittle extra for gas and then we plan on going....it takes about $200-$250 for that and I can save that up about 2-3 times every year---I could save more but I dip into it every now and then for change for maybe a car wash...a cold dring...etc!.... Speedy
Finding a home with a $2,000 down payment in Orange County is quite an accomplishment - three years ago the median price in the county was in excess of $300,000!
Among the big winners is Coinstar, since they take a cut of every cash-in. We have a coffee can that we throw change into, every so often it goes into the bank account of one or both kids. (The local branch has a counter.) The $2 a day figure isn't out of line if you're on a cash basis, but we find we're moving more and more to plastic such as debit cards.
I always save my change to search for errors when I have time! I noted that I received several 2005-P Minnesota State Quarters in change on Saturday and when I checked them, one was one of the Doubled Die Reverse Varieties. I have not been able to tell which one it is yet or if it is a completely new Variety. There are three that are very similar but this one appears to be slightly different than all of these!
But, if you use the change and it deposit to the bank on ocassion you will earn interest. Just use a separate bank account for that 'rainy day fund'.
I get about $2 a day in change. I either get it from purchases or find it on the road. You'd be surprised the amount of money is sitting on the street. When i walk down the sidewalk, i look on the road next to the curb and always find money. I can't beleive people who throw quarters out the window. I even found a silver '56 quarter this way about 3 weeks ago. I just redeemed my last 2 months worth of change...about $150ish. I used it to buy some coins
i metal detect near my road all the time. we live out in the middle of nowhere and i still find change. why would somebody throw change out the window? i keep every cent i find and put it into a 1 gallon plastic milk carton and when i cant stuff anymore coins in, i roll and take to the bank. you be suprised what your change can do! i once had $300 in change 1 time. i saved for a couple years.
Roy: I missed that quote good catch. The reported was obviously in a time warp, some time in 1923, I would thinnk.
I wish i knew. One time i got a flat on the highway so i had to pull over and change it. While i was putting the flat in my trunk, i noticed a lot of change on the shoulder of the highway in the breakdown lane. I think i picked up $5 just in that one spot. I have a job that puts me out on the highways as well since i'm a state contractor. I get into places the general public can't and find lots of change and such. I found a '40 and '57 wheatie on the street a couple weeks ago..along with a '56 quarter. Different spots, but that's my last months "keepers" from off the street. Best find ever was about a year and a half ago was when i was doing a job underneath a bridge built in the 20's. There were a series of peirs under the bridge that held the navigation lights. Well they were original and needed replacing so we had to pull up boards and such. This was directly under the bridge where a sidewalk was. As we pulled up boards i was finding wheat cents, buff nickels, merc dimes and everything that fell down onto the peir and got caught between the boards. Some was in very rough shape from the salt but a few were nice. I was in heaven! I found a '29 Standing Liberty quarter underneath an old drawbridge console i replace last winter that was put in sometime in the late 40's. I love working in old buildings and locations
That's all I could think about while reading the article. I wonder if perhaps he bought a closet in someone else's condo?
I think the reason for the change on the road is from ash-trays----people smoke and the ash covers over the coins, they drive down the road and put the tray out the window to clean them out and the change goes with it. Speedy
I use cash when making all of my daily routine purchases. I only use checks or plastic when paying bills, or ordering something from a catalogue, or on-line. I cash my change in for free at my bank, which has a machine, and does it for free for customers. I make about 50 dollars a month from saving my change.
It's amazing how quickly change can accumulate. However, I will never use CoinStar, as they take about 8% for their service. Many banks have change counters that members can use free of charge. Plus, by depositing it into the bank, you gain interest on it.
