Most buy from TV because either they don't get out of their house and have the tv coin shows as their only source of information. I think the coin shows are fun to watch, just to see how far they strectch the truth and that they will say anything to sell a coin, itis hillarious.

I use to think the coin vault dude (big one) did know something about coins but now i wonder. when he get on there trying the sell the Anniversary gold set for 11k and talks about how they were sold out in 19 minutes becouse he got a "back order status" and knew he would never get them. One day he has a set, the next day he could not afford one. Heck he did not even know how much they were selling for from the mint.

Even I as a rookie know better that this. It is fun to watch if you can tvo it and page through most of it. What really amazes me is they apparently sell a bunch of this stuff. All one has to do is go online and find it often for less than half of what they are selling this far. unbelievable....

they are funny I love it when they cut each other. and their could have , should have, would have line. then there is that " I am telling you as honest as i can" lol

I call it "putting lipstick on a pig"...

Look...this is America and you can buy and sell anything you want for whatever price you deem necessary. These guys on television have to cover their costs of salary, air time, support, etc. and if they make a dollar after they pay their bills, well..."God Bless America".

Nobody is forcing the buyers to pick up the phone and call and I am sure many buyers after receiving their coins are more than likely happy with their purchase.

Now...I do have a problem with deceptive/false advertising (i.e., this "First Strike" nonsense), but just like coins and anything else, all buyers should BEWARE before they buy.

    Very true.
If there weren't plenty of people buying them, they would most certainly be off the air. Unfortunately, those buyers that are not knowledgeable about what they're buying are in for a rude awakening if and when they try to sell them in the real world.

These programs are mass marketers who are aimed at impulse buyers. It doesn't matter what they are promoting, whether it be coins, jewerly, excercise equipment, cooking utensils, etc. The "hosts" are commissioned sales people who are there to sell the product. The coins presented are not aimed at sophisticated collectors, more so they are directed to viewers who believe it to be a good investment, but lack the experience or knowledge of the true worth. It's the old adage: "it's worth what someone is willing to pay".

It's really the same when buying a car. Few buyers truly know what the car is actually worth in relation to what they are paying. It's all predicated on the buyer's desire to own that car, the cost becomes secondary. The sales people are there to reinforce that desire and close the sale.

By and large, the general public has a belief that coins are investments and the hosts are there to reinforce that concept. Unfortunately, its the norm in almost all forms of sales, be it real estate, coins, jewlery, or stocks.

I do not have any problem with them making a buck and they do have expenses that most do not have. The problems I have is like the 2006w they are selling now . They were touting them as having a mintage of something like 209,000 . Did not bother to tell that there was an additional 270,000 in sets. Kind of stuff i have problems with.

Well, I really believe that these TV shop at home companies should not be in the collectibles business. They are not preying on the collectors they ARE on the elderly and infirmed. Most of whom find themselves sitting in fromt of the TV listening to all this HYPE. I agree they should know better but they are lonely and mostly have no one to guide them on their purchases for the most part. Who here would be purchasing these items? Anyone here even thinking about pruchasing this Coin Vault 20th anniversary MS70 set?

I recently went to visit my aunt and she and two elderly neighbors had been purchasing the statehood quarter and silver dollar collections from "Postal Commemorative Society". She told me that she had been paying $50 per coin for the silver dollars. Each holder contains one coin along with a cancelled stamp. I am not a coin collector per se, but I cannot believe that these coins are worth $50 each in their condition. My aunt and her neighbors were also purchasing the "Postal Commemorative Society" Statehood Quarters Collection that contain a P and D mint mark quarter on each page and has from 2 to 4 U.S. mint stamps on the reverse of the page. Each page cost them $16.95. I now have these sets and there are 32 different silver dollars and 25 pages of the statehood quarters. So in effect she's paid $1600 for the silver dollars and $423.75 for the state quarters. While the coin panels look nice, I seriously doubt the true value of them with the coins and stamps.

I believe I have found the parent company that distributes this stuff but their web pages don't show how to obtain them or contact their distributors.

    MBI

I don't know how they found the supplier. I don't locate them on the internet and have not seen them on the TV shopping shows. I imagine that it might have been from a magazine. I spoke with my aunt again and she doesn't remember. Her neighbor is still getting her quarter collection and hopefully I will get the name and address of the distributor. I am hoping it's not a TV vendor, but looking around my aunt's home we found ton's of stuff she's been buying from the likes of HSN and QVC.

It would be nice if the 24 hour a day NEWS channels would run a routine buyer awareness program to these TV Shopping channels especially regarding collectibles to help these folks who sit in front of their TV's most of the day.

While at my aunt's home, my sister and I warned here to avoid these collectibles on TV and to start checking out prices at the local level on household items and such. We had our notebook computers and showed her some price comparisons of some of the items she had purchased and how even Wal-Mart, Sears, Target, K-Mart, Kohls and Costco had the identical items at cheaper prices even after shipping and taxes were applied. I'll admit that I rarely visited my aunt but now I'll be checking in on her more often, along with all my other aunts and uncles and make some inquires as to their using TV shopping channels to make purchases.

I am glad I have access to this forum and others so that I've been able to learn some great information regarding coins and grading. Too bad everyone doesn't have access. BTW, my next visit to my aunt's home will bring here my old notebook computer and free internet access and some training on how to use the internet.

I really think that you owe a lot of pigs in this country an apology.
They never had anything to do with those guys. (Kinda like those poor cavemen on the Geico commercial).

I looked online at the PCGS pop report and they still haven't graded an UNC Silver Eagle as MS 70 going back to 1999.

Can anyone speculate as to WHY?

With the million's upon milion's of coins that were made WHY hasn't PCGS found any MS70's?

Could it be that all the new dies were flawed?

I have just found a source for the Statehood Quarters...

    THE DANBURY MINT STATEHOOD QUARTERS

They may also be the source for the The U.S. Silver Dollar Collection as well but I cannot find them on that website.

Sure I can speculate, and probably start Grading Wars XXXIII - but what the heck, 'lll do it anyway :D

My honest opinion, PCGS flat refuses to assign the MS70 grade more than once in a blue moon because they are trying to maintain the mistaken perception that they are tougher or more strict than the competition when it comes to grading coins. And because it helps to maintain a falsely inflated value for the coins that they do grade as 70's.

Have heard or read some place that they did not give a 70 grade in the silver because milk spots can appear on them even after they are graded and would have to refund money if this happens. or was is a dream

thought they had changed that policy lately. still see they are using First strike

It's just more specualtion. But if it were true, then how do they explain they don't assign the 70 grade to non-silver coins or why they are assigning so many 70's to the anniversary set coins. They're silver
