Just bought this on ebay. They said it graded at AU, but i was wanting to get your opinion. Also i only paid $6.00 for it and i thought that was a really good price. What do you think? 1897 Indian Cent.JPG 1897 Indian Cent 2.JPG

It's been cleaned fairly thoroughly and retains no original color. This is what I consider a cull, worth about 25-cents.

Just wondering how you can tell it has been cleaned

As Yoda stated the color is a give away of a cleaning, I can see some hairline scratches indicative of a cleaning as well.

You said "they said it graded AU"; by they are you referring to NGC?(as it looks like it's in an NGC holder)

Yes i agree on this one for sure cleaned and not worth much but the lesson you learned about how you can tell if an indian head was cleaned based on color is priceless and will hopefully help you not get taken on a cleaned coin in the future !!

The coin has an odd and not natural pinkish-salmon coloration that is indicative of copper that has been cleaned. Additionally, the fields show evidence of manipulation where the corrosion and gunk that was covering the coin was chased away with a tool, fingernail, thorn or something else. The images of this coin make it appear to have multiple issues, but again I have not seen it in-hand.
