I have just started a small collection of a few proof sets, Jefferson nickel proofs, some commem silvers, and the ubiquitous state quarters. I was thinking about just getting one of those plastic storage tote type boxes like you see at Target to keep them in for the time being. Is this an okay method of storage? Obviously the proofs are still in the mint plastic case things and the state quarters are in a Dansco album with plastic slide covers.
I think that would be fine as long as you dont store the tote somewhere where there may be alot of moisture like a basement or perhaps a garage depending on the climate that you live in. If you store the tote inside your house I believe it'll be fine. I'm sure some of the other members here will have some ideas as well.
Is there something I can get to measure the moisture in a room and then in an enclosure??? I've just bought my 1st house and because of space I think I will have to put my safes in one of the rooms in the basement... As far as I can tell, the is no drips or leaks in this basement, but I'd like to make sure the moisture levels remain OK... I'd hate to put all my stuff in the safe and come back in six months to look at it and have eveything tarnished...
Put rechargable silica gel packs in the safe, check on them every week - they change color when they need to be recharged. You should be fine.
Silica gel packages are available from Coin World in rechargable packets. They are supposed to be very good quality.
