is this coin legit http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=331058282597&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123
Two points: 1) The image does not show the entire scale. I could just as easily place an item out of shot that made this coin weigh 27.0 grams. And weight alone does not guarantee a genuine trade dollar. 2) For $112.50, I would think perhaps it would be a much better idea to save up a little more money and get a problem free example with wear...and I'm doing my best to avoid judgement calls on its aesthetic characteristics (to each their own.) That being said, it doesn't look obviously fake to me...but I'm not an expert on Trade Dollars.
As cool as a Trade Dollar would be to own, I wouldn't risk it with that one. Looking at his shop, I also find it odd that every single US coin he is selling is highly toned. Nothing wrong with that, although he could be doing it artificially, would would give me the red flag not to buy anything from him.
Is it your coin? The Ebay name looks similar? I don't think being only 27 grams is a major red flag it's not very far off from 27.22 grams and scale calibration could account for some of that. It's also a high mintage common date so imo with a quick glance over it looks good. Might do better selling it in an auction vs. using buy it now though.
One point: Read the seller's name. j/k Anyway, nothing immediately struck me as being off, but considering the overall poor condition, this does not mean a great deal. The obverse and reverse types appear to be correct for the date, but one thing I did notice is the apparent lack of a period after FINE, and if I remember correctly, there is a variety lacking this feature. However, I believe the period after DOLLAR should also be missing, while on yours it is clearly there. I don't have the extra time to put into this, but since you have the coin in-hand (or so I assume), if you're willing to do the homework, I have a few links that may be of help. Feel free to let me know.
It looks ok , but the lack of a dot after fine bothers me as I couldn't find it in Breens Encyclopedia . Where the Chinese usually mess up is the eagles eyes and nose . Yours looks fine . I guess the lack of a dot could be oil in the die , but to me all raw TDs are suspect . I have one that Tom Delorey couldn't say was real or fake unless he could do more tests . But he couldn't tell by just looking at it . Lots of good fakes out there .
BTW - I wasn't insinuating that bkozak was peddling fakes...I was thinking that it seemed expensive for such a damaged coin...that's all. I did see the seller's name...
I don't like the looks of that Family Guy DVD set. Could be a fake, which is punishable by up to a $250,000 fine and a maximum of 5 years in prison.
The Family Guy set is legit. If you notice the die break on the obverse, it shows it was a later print
