What on earth is it? Looks like some kind of medal struck over a 3rd Reich coin, with the value replaced by 1948 (by which time the "Deutsches Reich" was history). Size, weight?

Here are a couple of "historic" DDR coins I absolutely wanted to have. DDR20Mk1970Engels.jpg DDR20Mark1968Marx.jpg
I doubt the USA will ever issue any Marx & Engels coinage.

and here is a "scientific" coin. Might almost be worth starting a new thread if anybody has more such.

Well, I could make a comment about the current political situation in the US, but ...:D By the way, the Federal Republic of Germany ("West G.") did issue a Karl Marx coin too.

Guess those are two images of two different coins. The one with the soldier is notgeld from Düren (10 Pf 1918 methinks), the other one is a Deutsches Reich coin from the post-WW2 allied occupation years.

This is a €10 collector coin featuring Max Planck and his thermal radiation law. The second one will be issued next month; it is about Heinrich Hertz and his research on electromagnetic waves.

I like the toning on this 1913 3 Mark. It was purchased in 2011 but I stumbled onto the photo today.

many of these were made my the meissen porcelain company (note the crossed swords symbol), which mainly makes stuff my wife would like. they're still going, though they don't mention anything about their numismatic past..

The 10 Mark piece was actually notgeld - and yes, those coins circulated in Saxony for a short period of time. The big piece was issued by or for the Wirtschaftshilfe der Deutschen Studentenschaft, an organization that supported students in various ways. Not sure how that one was used, but I don't think it circulated like the Meissen money ...

hu...intresting. thanks chrstian. maybe th big one was for thosewho had made adonation or something. 30 marks wouldn't have been much money, ever before the worst of hyperinflation?
