Who? Me? Would I do that? Thanks for the welcome and yes it's an S-7. Nice work Mark. Not a coin most folks would recognize. A lot of cool stuff has been wrote about these and Rick's book is a great read. Some call these a Multi-denominational clash. The clash on the right side of the obverse is actually the profile of Liberty from the 1857 $20 gold piece. It takes a minute to see it. I collect some strange stuff.:smile I'll post some others when I find the images.
Just in case you want to buy one, Mark. http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/23...007QQitemZ170182022087QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Nice piece, Larry.
Thanks for the link. I didn't see that one. This is the S-9. I noticed Heritage has one of these on Ebay as well. Edit to add. This is the clash with the 1857 half dollar.
Okay, here is the word. Anyone who guessed cud: WRONG! Clashed die: partly correct. It is a high grade example of Snow-6. A clash mark with a $20 double eagle obverse. A very scarce variety, and desirable. (I only say this because the chances of my chreeypicking one are slim to none.) This shows the value of a collection of reference books.
Also, for the record, you can't have a cud and have the tops of the letters showing, as in the top of the 'AM' of America.
The first image I posted is the S-7, Clash with the $20 gold piece. The second image is the S-9, Clash with the half dollar. The S-8 is the clash with the quarter and I'll post it once I find the image. The forth coin to this set is the quarter with the clash of the cent die. This is the key to the set. I don't own one now, but I do have an image from a friend. I'll post it as well.
Very nice coins, ldhair. Had I gone to my attribution books I might have come up with those Snow #s. I'll try to come up with some photos of my 1857 FE S-22 soon. NOT IN THE BOOKS YET. Bruce
This is the S-8. Clash with the quarter. It's tough to find one that has not been messed with. Last is the quarter with the cent clash. If you find one of these, I'm a buyer. As far as I know, no one has found a gold piece or the half that match the cent.
Can you see the photos? These would be the earliests Photos we have ever seen from lD. I'd like to see them.
