Not sure if anyone saw this yet. I would've loved to see this collection, well actually I would've preferred to own it. Pretty good investment if you ask me. http://news.msn.com/pop-culture/missouri-coin-collection-began-with-rare-penny
Didnt heritage sell this collection? I think all the pictures are on their website. There are some ridiculously high grade, rare coins in his collection.
Was some incredible stuff unknown off the market for 60+ years and straight right with great provenance and eye appeal I was responsible for a small part of that total ($2600+) and underbid twice that was one of those sales I wish I had a lot more money and I don't think this is all he's still alive and well at 102 too maybe these great coins are the key to longevity
I'm familiar with this collection and would caution folks to realize that there were some incredibly choice and rare coins in there as well as some coins I would strongly advise folks to avoid.
Ill post it once I get it I bought a 1829 half dime in ms-62 with great color a 1838 half dime unc details cleaned a 1876-cc dime in au-58 a 1878 dime in ms 63 with incredible color and a 1890-cc Morgan in au-58 with good color I wish I was able to buy more but I've spent too much on coins lately ill post em once they come
yup there was some beauties and I'd say 80% were wonderful and had great eye appeal and great color but your right there was some real mundane stuff and problem stuff and some plain old crap and much of the coins went far above and beyond retail and many were worthy and some weren't basically its a classic case of buy the coin not the slab or the name edited to fix quote tags
Eric P. is one of the few coin collectors to own all five 1913 Lib nickels at the same time. He was also the primary researcher/writer for The Fantastic 1804 Dollar. And if that's not enough, he got to put his arm around Victoria Stone once-I think that was the occasion of his 90th birthday.
This was only Part II of the Newman Collection. Part III goes on sale at Heritage in January. I picked up a Buffalo Nickel and 1892 Columbian Commem. Prices were very strong in Part II and you had to be willing to pay a premium if you wanted a coin from the collection.
Look at ha archives and you can see the entire collection and prices realized the great 1796 quarter is the cover of the book on early quarters too there's quite a few from his collection in it
And if I am not mistaken what they have been selling are his duplicates with some better stuff (his better dups?) mixed in. After all this funds his numismatic museum. If he sells off all the coins, what's in the museum? Eric's collection is extensive and I think they just selling a modest portion of it.
