What kind of metals is this coin made of? Mine is very dark and I would like to lighten it if at all possible, but I'm not sure if the blackness is corrosion or dirt. Yes, I know "never clean a coin". I would still like for the coin to be more readable, giving it more value to me. Is there any way to get rid of the black coloring? I call this my atheist coin, as it doesn't say "in god we trust".

They made them in silver and in nickel. You probably have the type made with nickel. 17.9mm. It's .75 copper with .25 nickel.

Many US coin types did not contain the IGWT wording. The Red Book is a wonderful read that contains tons of useful information. Better still, you don't have to buy a new edition every year; simply buy one and use it forever.
