Hello everyone! So, I just received a 1 oz gold bar from the Perth Mint in a trade. It's my first encounter with this holder (not to mention my first 1 oz bar) and I have to say I'm impressed and a little jealous! The bar is housed in a solid plastic holder that's similar to a driver's license. I can see both sides of the bar (as well as the edges) pretty clearly. There is a little movement, if shaken, inside the clear plastic housing for the bar. I love the slimmer profile of this holder. At it's thickest it's 4 mm. I have to believe this would make storage and transportation MUCH easier. It has to have many more possibilities, from a design standpoint, for what the holder could look like. There is plenty of room for icons, bar codes, serial numbers, magnetic stripes, QR codes, holograms, stickers, etc...many of which could be directly incorporated in the plastic case itself (and not outside.) Could be any color...which could make sorting easier...and doesn't look like it would be any easier to counterfeit than a regular slab. I wonder how easily the plastic could scratch up over time; of course, I've noticed that most of the slabs I receive from NGC are scratched already by the time I get them. Yes, most. I have to think it would be cheaper to produce, uses less plastic, and would make shipping costs decrease. I'll bet if you wanted to incorporate another material it wouldn't be too awful (metal, wood, paper) to create a "luxury" holder...to charge an arm and a leg for, of course. To me, it seems like there are many, many advantages of a holder like this - if I had a choice, I'd absolutely opt for this right now. In fact, I think tonight I'll research if you can buy one of these machines and use it to self-slab... I'm wondering if anyone else has a holder like this, or has heard any rumors of a major TPG moving in this direction? Thanks!
Well, because I'm too lazy to do it right now...here is a link to a PM/coin company's photos of a CertiCard: http://www.gainesvillecoins.com/pro...curity-case-with-assay-and-serial-number.aspx
speaking of protective containers....I bought from my Walmart store these "Plano" fish fly cases that are perfect for protecting my PCGS and NGC, ANACS slabbed coins for 1 coin each. I will take a pic of them tomorrow for all to see. I keep my most prized Belgium coin in it. It is perfect to put in your front pockets to transport and show off at the coins shows I go to in Las Vegas. pics tomorrow.
Yes, thank you...wasn't fishing for compliments...just curious what anyone thought about this style of "slab" for coins compared to the current styles in use.
