Rick, what that site says is a piece of foreign matter got stuck in the striking chamber and was struck by the dies, retaining part of the design. When the next coin was fed in, the foreign matter that retained part of the design was struck onto the die, only transferring the design, not actually becoming stuck to the coin.

That's fine, just letting you know what the site you linked says. When you show it to jim m, potter, etc let us know what the verdict is.

Knowing Potter or being a member of CONECA certainly does not make one an expert in errors and varieties.. for that matter nor does 40+ years in the hobby. I'm just a greenhorn as I like to call it. I actually only know of a few (VERY FEW) experts in this E/V hobby. Could probably list them on one hand. There are many out there (here) who have certainly garnered respect in the EV hobby however. Does any of them know it all? NOPE..

My first thought when I look at a coin is.. How in the minting process could this have happened? I bet Mike and Bill both think the same thing.. Alot of times looking on forums at Pictures its hard to see depth, true color, lots of things so its a guessing game on alot of it. But other times perhaps Bill, Mike or whoever has seen numerous coins of the same variety and know what it is even with a bad picture.

Whats hard on the hobby is people stating what it is and being 100% wrong then getting called out and not liking that they too are not "experts" even though they have been collecting for over 6 weeks already.

The hardest part of this hobby is trying to figure out HOW it happened. I get asked a lot of questions like.. What caused it? Well, thats a great question.. perhaps a big red dog ate the coin and since the dog had worms it was scrapeing its rear end on the pavement when it passed the coin.. how the heck do I know what caused PMD.. sometimes it obvious, jewelry encased, Drill bit, square nail etc.. other times.. be a good story teller.
    : )...

Wow! what a thread about a coin with something dried up on it . darn it Rick when you find another one like this scrape the snot or whatever is on the coins off. you have lots of members like me on here with over 40 years of collecting coins under their belt saying it is dried up junk or solder and you still don't want to listen. all you have to do to find out it is dried up junk is to scrape a small section of it off , this is really simple to do.

In all honesty, at least what I can see from the pictures, I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that this was a die clash...I don't see anything that resembles part of the design from the opposite side (or same side for that matter). All I see what looks like some gunk attached to a coin...

Rick, do you not notice that the "second dome" is two to three time larger than the original. Did this "counter clash" make the dome grow? I do wish you good luck with it though.

Rick I have been begging you to scrape some of this junk off this coin so you can then see for yourself it is just some kind of junk dried up on it. I bet everyone that reads this is laughing their butts off at you. there where the U and R is at in the word pluribus take something like say a sharpened toothpick and remove the junk covering the U and R and see for yourself. If you damage the coin in any way and a error expert says it was a mint error "which it definately is not" then I will pay you whatever the expert says it was worth. please stop this nonsense and be careful handling this coin with bare hands beause it sure looks nasty. go ahead and be brave and scrape this junk off , you have my word I'll pay for the damage to the coin if it really is a mint error. hurry up and let everyone know what you learn

Jay there is no second dome , this is just a line in the dried up junk.

good morning everyone, I took a tooth-pick and tried to scrape away the extra dome, nothing scrape off, or anywhere else at that matter, if its metal, then I would think the coin should weight a little more then normal, I'll weight it, then I'll post the weight for everyone
