Thanks for posting the coin & write-up. I had never seen the coin type until this thread got bumped today.
Well, it looks like my grandiose coin/wine idea is a no-go. Unsurprisingly, some of the coins on these labels are super megabucks rarities. Like the one on the Treveri wine... it's a gargantuan gold medallion of Constantius Chlorus from the Arras hoard. Maybe I'll just try to find one such wine/coin... one that is actually available and within my price range
Those medallions are spectacular, although I wouldn't count them as coins in any sense because of their lack of being used as currency and in an odd denomination. Or, perhaps that's just the cognitive dissonance I apply to justify not buying one
Oooh, I haven't heard that in a while. Coin or no, if I had the money, that medallion could find a new home right here in Tampa. (BTW, we all use cognitive dissonance on a regular basis.)
Found more with some help from friends. Looks like there are more such labels than I imagined. A complete collection will be completely out of budget . New strategy: of the ones whose coins I might be able to find and afford, I'll try the wines and then buy coins for a few that I like the best. Bennett Lane -- four different coins on four wines. http://www.bennettlane.com/About/OurLabels/tabid/76/Default.aspx 1, 3, and 4 are probably readily available and not bank-breaking. I'm having trouble recognizing #2. The website just shows the obverse and the description says "Bacchus, 78 BC". Hmm, is it a Roman Republican? Not finding it. Do any of you recognize it?
