Picked up and nice FH. It has a nice portrait style but something else makes it a little special. See if can guess Constantius II. AE2. Lyons. DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, A behind head / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, soldier standing left, one knee drawn up, about to spear fallen horseman wearing a Phrygian helmet and is sitting on ground, arms raised. A in left field. Mintmark SLG star. RIC VIII Lyons 102. Also got a ant of Gallienus I've kind of wanted, and was cheap Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. Siscia mint. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right / LIBERO P CONS AVG, Panther walking left, B in ex. Cohen 586. RIC 574
Yep the reverse of your Lyons FTR is quite different than mine. No horse for one. Here is mine from Lyons'
Very nice coins Randy, is the rev of the guy on the horse facing right..i like the Gallienus animals, great lookin' cat...my bad...Ripley your are very nice too...
Both coins are nice, but the Constantius II is the better. As for the reason you bought it, I would assume it has something to do with the arrow in the horses rump? It is certainly different from most others regardless if it is the horses rump.
Man, those are two fantastic lookin' coins, randygeki ... => congrats-congrats!! Here are my examples:
Thanks all, and nice coins too! I got it not just for the style, but for a small detail, rosette-diademed. Compare Steves FH with mine and Dougs. I haven't seen one for sale before, then I see three I bid on this one, but was unable to get home in time to raise my bid. Thankfully I got a 2nd chance and saw it on Vcoins at a good price. I used think the most of the Gallienus zoo types were kind of boring, but began to like them a little each time I saw them. When I saw this one at the local shop and had it in my hand, I had to snatch it up Can't saw I have any plans on getting more, but I used to not like FH as much as I do now.
neat RG....as DS said pointed out , i did notice the bottle brush tail...that caught my eye first. but i didn't notice the shield "dooger"...what the heck is that?
I'm not much of a Fallen Horseman collector, but the sheer variety one finds in the series is pretty cool. Here's mine, from Arles : Z.
Nice coins everyone. I don't have that particular variety of FH to share, but I do have a well-cut Gallus, and here's my Gallienus panther again. It's curious that another should come up on the board so soon - it seems they're the least common of the animal series issues. Notice that Gallus gets a bare head - he was only ever intended as Constantius II's Eastern lackey, and never achieved the rank of Augustus. In fact, he thought he was going to receive the laurel wreath atop his head when Constantius recalled him to Rome, but instead he lost it altogether. The moral of the story: if you're summoned to Rome, make sure you've written your will.
