I notice in this BU dollar there seems to be some sort of flaw, Not sure if it lamination, struck through grease or what, but it is on both sides in the same area.
I would say definitely struck through some type of foreign matter. Might have been hardened grease or metal shavings.
It doesn't look to me like a strike through, as the recessed areas appear to exhibit very coarse radial flow lines which likely would result from the free flow of metal where material was absent from both sides of a defective planchet before strike.
The both sides thing is an issue. I suppose grease could drop off the hammer die onto the anvil die, but is that both sides of the same coin common? Can we quantify the rarity of a planchet flaw like this on the presidential dollars? And why hasn't Peter imputed planchet into the sites smell checker yet?
A graininess with struck throughs is not uncommon. http://www.coinworld.com/articles/gritty-paste-likely-causes-field-restricted-s And I've seen many coins exhibiting struck-through grease on both sides.
How can you not love an article not yet published? "By Mike Diamond | 11-09-13 Article first published in November 18, 2013, Expert Advice section of Coin World " My friends, welcome to the future ! I need to transport myself forward in time to that site So how do we differentiate between struck through an planchet error?
Because grease is so fluid, strikes through grease generally do not exhibit well-defined boundaries at the edge of the error. It appears to me from the photos that the area of concern is fairly well defined at the edges, and more likely the result of the planchet having delaminated on both sides before being struck.
Grease is fluid, but the greasy "gunk" that hardens is not. http://error-ref.com/Struck through smooth, viscous material (grease, oil).html
Look at the Presidential Dollar struck-through at the bottom of this page- http://minterrornews.com/news-4-22-07-inside_minting.html
According to that if this is a struck through it is not even note worthy "4b.) A coin with a small areas struck through grease, as shown, is not significant enough to be considered a mint error and is not noted on the holder by NGC. Recognized struck throughs are struck through foreign material and/or missing major design elements." There fore, I am rooting for Planchet error !!
