I have a 1776 Silver Reale which is very worn. It has chopmarks on the Hispana side and a counterstamp G W LETTER over the portrait side. Has been quite tarnished around the counterstamp. Have looked at many sites for G.W. LETTER, but have not yet located. Does anyone know what it refers to and how it affects the value of the coin? Thank you.
Google the exact phrase "GW counterstamp" and you will find several, including this 1807 which sold at auction in 2007: http://www.icollector.com/1807-Mexican-1-Reale-Counterstamp-GW_i7281627 No one seems to know its origins, I read all 5 of the hits.
Thank you so very much for your reply. This coin was among things my grandmother in Bronxville, NY had in her possessions when she died. Some of the family came from France as early as 1681 so I do not know how she came upon it.
