    Hi,

I have this 1870 Thaler but I can't really figure out what type of value it has. I know there are more variations of this but I can't really find something with the exact same details. Maybe you can help. Thanks.

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

They are listed under Austria in the "Trade Coinage" section of Krause-Mishler, although the prices are out of date; they sell at percentages of bullion price, not by date, since nearly all are 20th Century restrikes. See KM #T1. They are 0.7516 Troy ounce, actual silver weight; do not mistake them for a "1 Ounce" coin.

Interesting, thanks. So the value of this in today's money would be... ?

On eBay, they are currently bid from around $12 to $20, plus postage. Search "Maria Theresa" under the "Coin" category. There are millions of them floating around the Middle East, no particular premium over bullion.

Current KITCO silver spot price (as of this writing) is $21.36 bid, and multiplying that by 0.7516 makes the silver "value" approximately $16.05 as bullion, maybe $19-20 for a nice example of the coin itself. Yours is quite worn and dinged, bullion value only.

Someone just told me by looking at the photos that it was stamped in Milano, Italy about 1840-1859. That sounds interesting. I guess I'll just keep it.

These particular bullion pieces were struck in 1780 and are still being created and still carry the date 1780!

This site will help you if you feel like finding the variety for your Thaler .

The easiest way to tell a modern restrike is by looking at the broach . If it has 9 or more round pearls it is a restrike.
